No one choked any worse than the Hokies did this year. Logan Thomas, O'Cain, Steinspring, and Beamer. He allowed this mess to continue.

That was part of his problem.

We had Miami on the ropes (game tied, driving for the go-ahead TD and blew it when our offense had been doing very well prior to that...), we blew a 10-point 4th quarter lead and then kicked to Gio, and then we got smashed on our homecoming by one of the worst teams in the league.

Had UNC been eligible , they would have won a three-way tiebreaker with Miami and Ga. Tech. Since UNC was not eligible, Miami is the division winner because they beat Ga. Tech in the regular season.

That's the point I was trying to get across, I just used Butch as an example because he was the first one to come to mind.

And I may be mistaken, but how is Miami the real Coastal champion? According to the News and Observer, Fedora, Renner, and Highsmith, UNC won.

"Had the Tar Heels been eligible for the postseason, they would have won a three-way tiebreaker among 5-3 teams and faced Florida State for the title in Charlotte next weekend."

It only makes sense that the winner of your division didn't play either of those teams."

Miami, the real winner of the Coastal, did play FSU albeit they lost, as did GT.

#1 - That's what i said, "Neither team appeared on our schedule, both are in the other division."

    #2 - I wasn't thumping anything. I merely replied to TBK's post saying Larry went 12-2 in C-usa.

  • kato_karma.v3 Dec 6, 2012
    Sports Legend

No chest thumping, cv...you play who is on your schedule.

WRT this past season, UNC performed well enough to mathematically win their division -- which equates to something that quite a few other schools have not accomplished since the ACC went to split divisions.

Exactly. Neither team appeared on your schedule. I'm not knocking Fedora for it, it wasn't his decision. However to go around thumping your chest about your ACC record without playing FSU or Clemson is misleading. Look at the other members of your division, and how they faired against them..

    GT - L to Clemson
Duke - L to Clemson, L to FSU
VT - L to Clemson, L to FSU
    Miami - L to FSU

The Coastal went 0-6 against FSU and Clemson. It only makes sense that the winner of your division didn't play either of those teams.

Lets get back to the original point of my argument. Do you believe that everything a coach tells a commit is 100% factual? And I'm not calling out Fedora specifically for this, btw.

  • BeastOnTheHill Dec 6, 2012

Neither team appeared on our schedule, both are in the other division. Did state play GT? Miami beat State. We were banned from the ACC title game or we would have played FSU.

And won! i mean heck, if state can beat them then anyone would have a chance.

  • BeastOnTheHill Dec 6, 2012
    Sports Legend

    View quoted thread

well no. If you are sharp and really understand what he said you would think about it a little but not necessarily change your commit. he said, "I am planning to..."

now, the recruit can take that for what it is worth but it doesn't mean that Larry is a liar as the sac proclaims. Larry does not know what may come along in the future. See the Mack Brown story.

True. Must've slipped my mind for a second.

My point remains the same though, Fedora's record doesn't mean quite as much when you consider who he did (or didn't) play. Heck, didn't Phil Steele predict them to go 12-0? Next year will be a better gauge at where the program actually is.

How many of those weak Coastal teams did Opie manage to beat this year?

Let me check on that....oh yeah...."0" comes to mind. I believe he had 3 losses to the Coastal...so 6-2=pipe dream.

  • 35 - 7 ROFL Dec 6, 2012

Pretty simple, actually. It just goes to show that what a coach tells a recruit isn't always 100% factual. It's nothing against Fedora, all coaches do it. If you actually believe that, you're going to tell me you take it as a fact that Fedora will retire from UNC?

5-3 sounds great until you mention UNC didn't play either FSU or Clemson. Heck, if TOB didn't play Clemson he could very well have finished 5-3 as well. Not to mention, check out the SOS ratings for UNC and the rest of their division.

    UNC - 101
    Miami - 47
    GT - 55
    VT - 57
    Duke - 60
    UVA - 58

  • 35 - 7 ROFL Dec 6, 2012

    View quoted thread

The irony of you telling someone to wait for the facts is quite comical. Need we revisit the CJ Leslie decision?

Further, as far as I know, what Fedora tells a recruit doesn't qualify as a "fact" (see the Butch Davis and Miami debacle). If you want to take Fedora at his word, then do you honestly believe him when he said he's "planning on ending his career at UNC"? I'm sorry but I think everyone with half a brain knows that UNC (like most ACC schools) is a stepping stone for another job. In fact, I'd be willing to bet that Fedora is gone before Fieulleteau uses up all of his eligibility.

Personally, I've never felt he would leave after one year. Sure ESPN reported how frustrated Fedora is with the ongoing NCAA issues and leaks, but I didn't think that alone would cause him to leave. If I have stated Fedora has left, please provide the evidence. Thanks, "skippy".

Now let's see...what's different about this years S Miss team from the year before when they won 12 games? Hmmm?

Oh yeah, their coach left. Their loss. Now if he will just hire someone who knows how to coach defense. That is what UNC needs to be concerned about. I believe the offense will be just as if not more potent next year.

Blue will do just fine. But he's no Gio.

Fedora's leftovers at Southern Miss finished 0-12 this year. You may need to be concerned about what Fedora will do in a few years when he has his own players and not someone else's leftovers.

Regardless of whether UNC had to play FSU or Clemson, seems like the Coastal was a tougher path to tread...at least by judging the Wolf("we control our own destiny after only 2 acc games")pack's results. 4-1 in Atlantic, 0-3 in Coastal.

The reality version of football this year.

    NC State
Coach Tom Obrien himself labeled this years team as one of the most experienced and talented teams he has coached. You will not find many Wolfpack fans who would say that this year was a success. The Wolfpack's lack of running talent put a lot of pressure on a great QB to succeed. While Mike Glennon was a bright star, his receivers lacked consistency and probably set a record for dropped passes. Defensively, the Pack was disappointing, especially in light of having David Amerson returning. Grade C-

    UNC
UNC's season was unusual to say the least, with all the turmoil surrounding the team, trying to figure out what kind of season they would have was anyone's guess. Factor in a bowl ban, new coach and a totally new system and it would not have been a surprise to see UNC struggle this year. And struggle they did, on defense, their defense was questioned in the preseason, for good reason. They were young and inexperienced in the secondary and it showed. However, their offense was spectacular, led by Gio Bernard and Bryn Renner. UNC's season had to be considered a success in light of the going-ons in Chapel Hill. Grade B+

    Duke
In year's past UNC, Wake Forest and UVA would have been L's for Duke. However, this year Wake Forest and UVA were not good, so Duke's signature win was vs UNC. They had one of the best WR's in the country in Vernon and took full advantage of that young man. Duke has been so bad for so long that it is hard to grade them this year, if one were to use the last 5 years as a baseline then Duke has had a great year. However, if one grades them without a baseline then it was a poor year at 6-6. They gave up a LOT of points in the games that they lost. Overall, Duke should be optimistic but losing Vernon for next year may return them to their customary spot at the bottom of the ACC Grade A (with Baseline) Grade D (without baseline)

The planets were in line for the Holes THIS year. VT and GT were both down this year, and you guys didn't have to play FSU or Clemson. This was a golden opportunity for your cheating to pay off, but it didn't.

Too bad you guys didn't do what I argued that you SHOULD have done last year, and that was self-impose a bowl ban. Instead, you thought it was better to play in the Music City Bowl. Had you done like I said, your penalty would have been paid, and you would have been going to a bowl this year AND playing for the conference championship (not that you would have beaten FSU, but you'd have been in the game).

You guys should listen to the Badger once in a while. I won't steer you wrong. :)
