What a Christmas present, seeing you squirm and writhe in a froth is as good as it gets. You've put up 300 posts in the last few days just on this. I'm not sure I've ever seen anyone's life so hinged on the goings on at a University. Oh, unless Dr. J talks, you got nothing, nothing, and even then, it's what they already know. Please move along everyone, the wagon will be here soon to pick up the little critter.

Yes, plenty of experts are commenting that the NCAA should return.

To be honest MO, it was kind of like justifying what went on at Carolina by saying "everyone's doing it". While I do believe many schools "help" athletes, it doesn't excuse what went on at Carolina. Two wrongs don't make a right. The thing that bothers me is Martin saying this wasn't an "athletic" issue. "Regular" students took the AFAM classes, but so did athletes; therefore, it IS an athletic issue.

Someone needs some ointment. Too long in the saddle there Cowboy? If only Martin could have written the report exactly the way you and the haters wanted to see it come out. I personally think it's a conspiracy with the drug companies and hospitals in concert with the news media, since just after the report was released, the ERs were full of patients with mental breakdowns and many pharmacies have run out of popular anti-depresants.

Nope, we are all celebrating the futility of the doomsayers such as yourself, and now at the drugs you girlz in Dooktown and the Red Rage Nation are having to take to get over the disappointment. We are sympathetic of the deep depression you will be going through over the report results.

And therein lies the rub gunny. How can anyone take Martin's report seriously when he makes such a defensive remark. He was charged with investigating one university. Why did he feel the need to make such a blanket statement? He didn't investigate any other school so he has no way of knowing if it is going on elsewhere. That is simple conjecture on his part. Again why did he feel the need to say well everyone is doing it. It sounds like markie wrote the report for him.

Not just Pack Pride, but most ABC'ers. The report also mentioned that this issue goes on at many schools, something they don't want to hear.

  • StunGunn Dec 21, 2012

While I don't think this was a "white-wash", it is disturbing, and I believe it IS an athletic issue, since athletes were involved in that they not only took classes in the AFAM Department, they were GUIDED to take the classes by advisors.

I believe Carolina is an excellent University, but I won't deny what has gone on since when - 1997 - is wrong. That said, the University was found guilty, punished, fired or accepted resignations of people responsible, and put measures into effect to ensure this will never happen again.

Those are old quotes simply being brought up again by the N&O because they know that as soon as this scandal dies their paper will die as well.

The NCAA has already stated "we don't care." ESPN noted yesterday that the Martin Report is likely to reaffirm their earlier position that no violations were committed. Sorry, ABCers, looks like you'll have to find something else to worry about now that the Martin Report has completely vindicated UNC's athletic department.

Michael L. Buckner, a Florida attorney who works with universities facing compliance matters:

"Naturally, improper changes of grades can lead to an NCAA rules-violation."

Gerald Gurney, a professor at the University of Oklahoma and the past president of the National Association of Academic Advisors for Athletics said the NCAA "absolutely" should begin an inquiry, if one hasn't already begun.

"UNC has a pattern of fraud perpetrated by faculty with the knowledge of academic staff and administrators. This report attempts to divert the athletic issues. No doubt about it. Their client is the university."

Dave Ridpath, a sports administration professor at Ohio University and a former compliance administrator (and incoming president of The Drake Group) said what has happened at UNC "is (a) direct violation" of the NCAA's rules on extra benefits and unethical conduct. He said the agency has punished others for less.

Link saying our athletes don't go to class? Of course you know that you don't have to actually "attend" a self-study course. That's part of the reason why NC State's QB Glennon hasn't actually been required to be on campus for anything other than games and practice for going on two years now.

    From Nov. 22...

"Orange-Chatham District Attorney Jim Woodall said Wednesday the investigation is focused primarily on the African-American studies department, where athletes were enrolled in no-show classes. Among some of the matters being investigated are potential fraud, forgery, misuse of state property and putting false information on state documents.'

I'm interested to see what they find.

"Orange-Chatham District Attorney Jim Woodall has asked the State Bureau of Investigation to conduct a separate probe of UNC-Chapel Hill's African and Afro-American Studies program, following findings of academic fraud by a university review."

And you left off the last part of what you quoted: "Of course, they can look beyond that. ...This would be very extensive. They could go in a lot of different directions."

  • FourAutumn Dec 21, 2012

You mean the same Jay Smith who said this?

"He also added that students and student-athletes cannot realistically be held to the same standards at any university.

“I think it is well-nigh impossible to have naturally competitive football and basketball teams and expect those students to behave like everyone else in the classroom,” Smith said. “It’s not realistic. It’s not right to expect these students to put in 40-50 hours of work into their sports each week and expect them to carry the same workload as other students. It’s just absurd. How can you take the marginal student that has been recruited to the university for his athletic talents and put him down in a classroom and expect them to perform at the same level as the other students?”'

Seems like Dr. Smith is confused about what he wants...other than to be quoted in the paper.

Interesting that professors at UNCheat still have questions.

If you do not look into certain facts and limit your investigation, you wont find the answers.

"Jay Smith, a university history professor who has been outspoken about the scandal, said Martin should have been scrutinizing how athletes in the big-money sports of basketball and football got into the suspect classes, and how they benefited from them.
“It’s a stunner,” Smith said. “I mean, I just can’t believe that they had such a blind spot for athletics.”

The charge given the SBI from the Orange County DA

"“Woodall granted that it is unlikely that anything criminal was going on, but he asked the SBI to look into the possibility of academic, computer or financial fraud by professor Julius Nyang’oro or administrator Debbie Crowder"

A justified investigation, especially given the results of the Martin report yesterday.
