The Reality Version of the UNC investigation
Heels fans, do yourselves a favor and don't get involved in a pizzing contest with the lunatic fringe. Here are some thoughts from Greg Barnes on IC. They are not sugarcoated

As troubling as the findings are, what may be even worse is that it took UNC roughly 15 years to identify the problems. Our focus at InsideCarolina.com, of course, is UNC athletics. And for the athletic department, Thursday brought about closure to nearly 30 months of question marks and criticism with former Gov. Jim Martinâs declarative statement: âThis was not an athletic scandal.â While the NCAA investigation highlighted a multitude of checks and balances failures throughout the athletic department, the Martin report effectively restored a level of respect to the front porch of the University.
Itâs one thing for a handful of student-athletes to accept improper benefits or receive inappropriate help with their academics; it would be quite another for the University to be complicit in massaging grades and classes to benefit student-athletes in an attempt to keep those players eligible. The Hartlyn-Andrews internal review released in May highlighted fraud and poor oversight in 54 classes between summer 2007 and summer 2011. The 10-page report found as no evidence of student-athletes receiving favorable treatment over other students or of students receiving grades without submitting work. There was also no information available to indicate that department personnel received any tangible benefits âbeyond their standard University compensation.â On Thursday, the Martin report confirmed the Hartlyn-Andrews internal reviewâs findings
RE: The Reality Version of the UNC investigation
Since the report was released in May, InsideCarolina.com has only written a handful of articles on the academic situation as it relates to athletics and the driving force in those articles was the NCAAs involvement. The reason for that level of coverage is simple we neither found nor heard of any evidence to support a grand conspiracy in keeping student-athletes eligible. As one high-ranking UNC source told IC back in the fall, this was a situation where students, including student-athletes, found out about easy classes and signed up for them. And while some may disregard ICs approach due to perceived bias, its important to note that the Associated Press and ESPN, with their Triangle-based writers, have covered the major storylines (Hartlyn-Andrews Review, Julius Peppers transcript, Martin probe announcement) without going overboard on specific classes to draw viewership. A rough count puts the AP and ESPN combined story count just south of 20 total.
The Raleigh News & Observer, on the other hand, assigned a reporter (Dan Kane) to cover the UNC academic situation and created a UNC scandal section on its website complete with 68 links on the first of four pages. The N&O published four stories on Wednesday alone.
A former newspaper editor of mine often said a reporters most difficult obstacle is preventing bias from seeping into his or her work. The bias he referenced is not the same that afflicts every fan base in taking a hard-lined rooting interest in one side or the other. Its more about allowing the facts of a story to determine your direction instead of letting preconceived notions push a storyline. I bring this topic up because I watched it happen during the NCAA investigation. Certain media members were convinced that Butch Davis was responsible for players taking trips and Jennifer Wiley providing tutoring help before the actual facts ever emerged.

And you finally show your face after being strangely absent after your team got paddled.
Also: TL;DR
RE: The Reality Version of the UNC investigation
Kane has really lost it. He's coming across like a two year old child who has been told that he can't have any more chocolate milk. He knows his career is tied to a failing newspaper, as no publication anywhere will ever hire a journalist, like you said, who can't hide his bias and even celebrates it.
All in all, a great day for the Flagship yesterday, and a terrible day for Kane. :)
facts
Theres a fine line involved. Its a reporters responsibility to check every possible angle of a story. Not doing so is failing to do your job. However, if you make your mind up prior to completing your work, then youre doing your readers a disservice.
I have to wonder if that approach bled into the N&Os coverage of the UNCs academic misconduct as there seems to be an intense effort to connect dots between the academic scandal and the athletic department that the NCAA, the Hartlyn-Andrews Review and now the Martin review team have all said doesnt exist.
N&O reporter Kane was critical of the review team during Thursdays press conference for not providing a breakdown of student-athletes in the most problematic classes listed in the report. The review included the conclusions of that data, but not the specific data itself, because as Raina Rose Tagle explained to reporters, Its not that interesting.
Chancellor Holden Thorp promised to provide that data to Kane, who offered the following comment in explaining his position to Gov. Martin: Right now, were left to trust your summarization.
And now the N&Os subscribers will be left to trust the paper's summarization

RE: The Reality Version of the UNC investigation
Good thread. It is fun to watch the ABC crowd whine and pull out their hair over the findings!
