And yet, they claim national championships. Seems pretty common throughout the nation.

100 years from now people will be asking the same thing to numerous football teams when the playoffs are set.Exp ( do you count those 2 BCS national championships that Alabama won 88 years ago). To answer your question yes b/c there was no Tournament back then and they crowned the number 1 team in the country the national champion.Just like they do in football now. Maybe Duke catch up by winning back to back these next two years.

I count it as a Helms Title. Not the same as an NCAA title in my book.

Neither is any NCAA football championship before the BCS but I challenge you to convince Alabama, Notre Dame, Nebraska, and all the others that they're claim to national title is no good.

no, dook, will finally be even with UNC in NCAA titles after xx years of ratk trying.

    but for now 5>4

Might as well start saying UNC has won 6 titles. Because after Duke's next one, that's what they'll be saying because that's all they have left.

Why that's correct B, they do also have 5 NCAA titles that help make their 6 National Championship Trophies. Thanks for breaking it down.

right because 5 is greater than 4 and those numbers do not include a Helms title.

This is a really stoopid thread. Only people who care are 100 years old...let them have their lil Helmsie.

  • FourAutumn Dec 21, 2012

With that logic, there is no school that can claim a National Championship in FBS football.

  • Lux Libertas Dec 21, 2012

    Let it go.

The Helms Trophy Can Never Harm You Again. It No Longer Exists.

When (and if) you ever set foot in the Dean Dome...AVERT YOUR EYES!!! Don't look at all of our illustrious banners hanging from the rafters, and everything will be okay. (Except of course for the beatdown your team is getting on our court. LOL!)

  • FAN72 Dec 21, 2012

Since there was no tournament in which to determine a National Championship, I question the claim. It was awarded by a media outlet at the time, not by any authority within the colleges/universities. That does not ignore the fact that the UNC team that year was superior to many others, it just was not a title won in competition.

you mean national championship voted by the Helms committee years later. There was no national championship of the time. Butler University also claims a so-called national title that season as well.

    UNC has 5 NCAA titles.

Of course they count it. It was the "National championship" of the time.

I guarantee, Dook, State Kolliege, Wake, or even Davidson for that matter would count it. Why wouldn't you count it?

Then again, it takes a to not be able to understand that though..... Enough said...
