Of course they count it. It was the "National championship" of the time.

I guarantee, Dook, State Kolliege, Wake, or even Davidson for that matter would count it. Why wouldn't you count it?

you mean national championship voted by the Helms committee years later. There was no national championship of the time. Butler University also claims a so-called national title that season as well.

UNC has 5 NCAA titles.

Since there was no tournament in which to determine a National Championship, I question the claim. It was awarded by a media outlet at the time, not by any authority within the colleges/universities. That does not ignore the fact that the UNC team that year was superior to many others, it just was not a title won in competition.

Note to ABC'ers:
