People usually chime in, "easy to win games when you pay players to attend school. I wonder which jewelry shops K's players will stop at this holiday season?"

Yeah, I bet everyone chimes in when you bring up the 40's and 50's.

Funny, we normally don't discuss the programs, we discuss the current state of the team. You know current events like this year.

I can just hear you when someone talks about the Texas game and Duke being undefeated and you chime in with "yeah but UNC has a better head to head over the last 60 years". Good one.

Oh , hurry back with that link of K proven to use paid players while at Duke.

Question. Weren't there athletes in these classes? Do you think athletes had their grades changed?

I don't care if the athletic dept was cleared, there were still athletes who more than likely had their grades changed and therefore were kept eligible (see Julius peppers).

All the Martin investigation did for me and academics all across the country from what I have read is raise more questions.

Have you read her published thesis? I have. She is bent on ensuring that NCAA athletics as a whole become a thing of a past. She doesn't want any university, anywhere, to have sports programs. She's loony.

The athletic department was cleared by the Martin report and was cleared by the NCAA earlier in the year. According to ESPN, the NCAA is unlikely to do anything further as the Martin Report didn't turn up any evidence of collaboration to keep athletes eligible. Case closed.

How has the athletic department been vindicated? Didn't athletes take theses classes? Weren't grades changed for athletes as well as the general population?

Should be interesting to see if the grade change issue is further investigated and if it kept athletes eligible.

We know you don't care, but actual folks who care about the integrity of the University and not just athletics do.

Of course Nyangaro scamming the school was wrong. That's why he's no longer employed by the university. Problem solved. Winner, winner, chicken dinner.

BTW-Willingham is a nut. One of the types who has never seen the outside of a library and is hell-bent on destroying athletic programs at any school nationwide. She's been rightfully marginalized by almost everyone by now.

It is sad to see such denial from semmingly intelligent people, and all because of sports. I wasn't accorded the levity to bypass my education and you probably were not either. To support such obvious disregard for our higher educational system is mind boggling to me and as a state taxpayer you should be upset that someone could receive $171K for performing a bare modicum of work......with you bearing the cost. My love of college sports (and ANY particular institution) will NEVER cloud my thinking like it has many UNC fans...not all, but far too many.
Is this the blueprint we are to use for raising our children and growing our nation? I love my wife, yet do not always condone everything she says or does. Sometimes the people (and places?) we love are wrong and it takes courage to say such. It doesn't mean you love them any less. I see NO courage emanating from Chapel Hill, except professor Willingham perhaps, but surely not from James Martin nor the majority of the UNC fanbase.

Easy...like someone else said, they probably wanted to get paid good money for doing minimal work. Since the athletic department as a whole has been completely and entirely vindicated by the Martin Report, that's the best and most logical scenario out there.

Not that it is much of a concern anymore, though. The scandal was revealed to be isolated, has already been dealt with, and the university is moving on! Time for ABCers to do the same.

This summary of the Amicus brief that Unc wrote on AfrmActn is more readable than the actual brief. Think about what is here. They are discussing adoption of a 8 percent plan for admissions. This would add a few thousand more under qualified students. If the addition of just a few thousand kids brings the average SAT score of the whole U down that far...how low is their SAT score? Answer-Very low.

"How would a percentage plan work elsewhere? In an amicus brief in support of racial preferences, the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill said it had modeled the effects of a top 10 percent plan in North Carolina. The brief conceded that racial and ethnic diversity would actually increase modestly âï¿&a
    mp;frac12; from 15 percent to 16 percent "non-white and underrepresented students" âï¿&a
mp;frac12; but claimed the plan would have a devastating effect on the academic readiness of students. The average SAT score, UNC fretted, would decline from 1317 to 1262. But is this really such a terrible result? According to data from the College Board, this very modest drop would take the average SAT at Chapel Hill from the 91st percentile to the 86th."

It is only an belief. While the school proudly claims its participation in affirmative action they do not release statistics most likely to avoid the lawsuits that Michigan U endured. It is just that the timeline of the class being established as well as it's growth conveniently coincide with the affirmative action establishment.

Thanks, Hokie. I was surprised at the light, almost jovial demeanor of Gov Martin as he spoke. He went over all the points made as a result of his investigation, which was a very serious subject.

Hope your guys come through their bowl with a win. Beamer does seem like a realy good guy; it's a shame he's been so loyal to some assistants who should be shown the dooe.

Your basketball team might just come through - Green is a great player and always gives his best effort. The Heels have been up and down; today they were "up", but look at their opponent. I hope both our teams have a good season, but it looks like Duke and State are the teams to beat in the ACC. All the best to you and your family for a wonderful Christmas and a Happy, Healthy New Year.

JGunn. You're one of the rare few that can write the truth on here. After you have researched the articles over the past 3 years involving UNC, I learned something tonight. Mischief as per Martin. I didn't catch this until you stated it. With all the many things involved with UNC, it behooves the leaders to do a gut check.

VT isn't all that much in football in bowl games. They didn't show much with the talent over the years. To win a bowl game would be a good thing. However, I think the many problems still exist. Beamer is one of the good guys. Too damm nice, and it will be his demise. Our football and basketball teams are mediocre right now. We won in OT against Bradley tonight. Bradley? Georgia Southern? I thought after the OK State they were for real. Nah.

JGunn. I respect and appreciate you for being yourself. You're real, girl. Merry Christmas!

THV, according to Gov Martin, grades were changed, and non-tenured professors were told to sign off on students that didn't even take their classes. Professors' names were forged. Those are pretty serious findings. People like you who did their own work are one thing, but grade changing and turning in work done by someone else is different. Professors were allowed to teach classes in their own style, and while freedom and flexibility can be conducive to keeping a class interesting, there weren't checks and balances in place to ensure academic integrity. I don't know if we'll ever find out exactly what went on in the AFAM Dept, but it seems like there was both academic and athletic fraud.

Merry Christmas to you as well, Hokie. Hope your team wins their bowl.

I'm saddened by all this. I recorded most of the press conference when Martin reported on his findings. He referred to it as "mischief". Mischief???? Mischief is when a little boy wearing his Sunday best jumps into a mud puddle. Academic fraud isn't "mischief". The things that went on at Carolina are far more serious.

Didn't you answer your own question? Why did they have the classes - to keep athletes eligible. Why open it up to the general student population? Perhaps it was in an effort to not look so obvious that the real goal was to keep athletes' grades up and therefore keep them on the field and court. Gov Martin speculated that a possible motive was to get more professors in the AFAM Dept; if each Professor had so many more students than they were supposed to have, maybe more professors would be hired to teach in the department. I'm not sure I buy into that theory.

There was an ebb and flow to the enrollment, which was kind of strange. It peaked in 2006, I think. Then it decreased in '09. The trouble seemed to start when Dr. J became Department Head and Little Debbie Crowder came on board.

I can't help but feel very sad as a result of all this. I believe in Carolina, and I hate that this was allowed to go on for so many years. Chancellor Thorp is left holding the bag and is stepping down, but this started when Measer was Chancellor.

At first I blamed Marvin Austin. Then Butch Davis. Then Dick Baddour. All these people may not be guilty afterall. This "system" may have been in place long before Butch darkened the doorway of Kenan Stadium. It's sad to me that all this went on in a great university.

The scandal cannot be isolated to just athletes, which is what everyone wants to do. I personally have taken one of the classes in question as well as 1 other class in the Department. I wrote a 10 page paper for 1 and attended class for the other. There were athletes (football players) in my class and they came every day. I was working full time and only wanted to take 9 credit hours of physical class time and needed another 3 credit hours to keep my full time status. I was told that I could write a research paper and get credit for 3 hours, so I took it. There were many other non-athletes, like myself, who wrote the research paper. This is why I do not believe that this was an athletic issue. If it is open to other students, then there should be no problem. Changing grades, however, would be an entirely different issue.

Your 1st sentence told me something. It tells me a heckeva lot about you in seeing the total picture. "it's both an athletic issue and an academic issue." You're the only one on here to say this in succient words. Gov. Martin is biased. They should have never allowed him to lead this valuable investigation.

It only will lead to more people to come to the fore and say loads of negatives about UNC. It didn't solve anything.

I sometimes say too much on here in regard to UNC. I use my son when I think about how many have erred in this entire scandal involving UNC. I never should have stated the things to kornfan. I was wrong, and I stated things that involved some UNC fans on another forum. I was ticked then. I'm working on this. Wishing you and your family a Merry Christmas.
