Then you understand why State cannot pull for Carolina this time of year. Nothing personal. It's a rivalry thing. :)

Besides, pulling for State is like pulling for your kid brother to do well. Until we're a perennial threat in basketball, there's no harm in pulling for State. But let State win a couple of national championships in the next decade, and you'll feel the same way about State. We've been so bad for so long, it's probably become OK for you not to hate us so much. We need to change that. :)

    Nice. Thanks, Beast!

It will take a monumental effort to beat Indiana, though. That write-up almost makes it sound like a foregone conclusion.

Wrong. Kansas playing Wichita State doesn't pull in a big TV audience. Roy Williams coaching against his old team that he betrayed brings in additional drama.

Nope. Mid majors make it exciting for the fans that want to see David slay Goliath.

The NCAA sets matchups that it hopes will be good draws. Otherwise, they'd just let a computer select teams and then randomly place them in the brackets. They put teams together for drama purposes sometimes.

And people love big upsets. I think they intentionally put good teams at the 12 seed, and overrank some lesser teams into the 5 seed. Then when the 12's "upset" the 5's, the fans love it and talk about it. Those upsets don't just happen magically. I think the NCAA sets the ball in motion, and then hopes for certain outcomes. It's a big-money business, too, not just an organization that lets Carolina get away with murder.

The Wolfpack spent a good portion of the season sleepwalking through their ACC slate; hence their underachieving No. 8 seed. But Indiana is vulnerable as the No. 1, and the Wolfpack need only to pull a single upset over the Hoosiers and they'll be in excellent position to make a run to the Final Four.

Lorenzo Brown and C.J. Leslie will be playing in the NBA next year at this time and Richard Howell is a rebounding force. All five starters average at least 12 points per game, and four of the five are upperclassmen. This is a veteran team that's very tough to shut down on the offensive end. The Wolfpack have the requisite size and athleticism to pull off an upset or two, and I'd like their chances in an Elite Eight rematch against No. 2 seed Miami.

No, but they didn't have to put UNC and Kansas in that bracket. You think that was purely by accident?

No, that was because we lost Lorenzo Brown for 3 games, and he was at less than 100% for a couple more after that.

They were overrated in the preseason (so was State).

But they played the way you would expect them to play with such heavy personnel losses, and new faces in the lineup. They overachieved once Roy went to that four-guard lineup. They were fortunate to not have too many great teams on their schedule, and they disposed of the lightweights. They also beat State and Virginia in the Dean Dome. For a team with hardly any quality wins, they overachieved to pull out 24 wins.

Sorry...I don't subscribe to the theory that the selection committee is making choices about the National Championship based on potential matchups.

If so, they would just leave all mid-majors out, because they bring nothing to ratings. Or exclude schools like NC A&T and put in Kentucky.

But if you want to believe that, have at it.

Do you not understand Business 101?

When you're purchasing a product you usually look at the cost compared to the products future value to you. If the cost is more than the value then basic logic says don't buy it. If the NCAA doesn't try to make the best possible match ups, which for television is determined by # of viewers, then CBS wouldn't be willing to pay $10.8 Billion for the ability to show the games.

  • FourAutumn Mar 18, 2013

    View quoted thread

Ah...so you think that a possible matchup between UNC and Kansas on the first weekend of the NCAA tournament in 2013 was a driving force in a contract negotiated in 2010?

Every game is going to be shown....CBS et al were not paying for matchups, they were paying for the tournament.

    View quoted thread

That definitely plays a huge part, but so does economics. And right now UNC being in the same bracket as Kansas yields the possible highest value compared to UNC vs any other #1 seed. You could argue that UNC vs Indiana would have a high value, but this matchup occured earlier in the season plus there would be a small chance for a 4th UNC vs Miami game and thats just no fun for anyone.

You are correct. Technically UNC outlasted State in the ACC Tourney, but then again your record was 2-1 and States record was 2-1, you'll just had the benefit of the bye to get you further.

And 2+2-4 equals zero. I think you were meaning 2+2=4.

Is that why State lost its last game to Carolina, finished lower in the ACC, was eliminated from the ACCT earlier than UNC, doesn't have a single vote in any poll while UNC has plenty, and was seeded lower than UNC?

Sorry, TBK, but you're wrong on this one. Everyone agrees on this, but you. Time to put down the crack pipe, my man, and just accept reality. The facts don't lie, and every single fact is against you. When 99 people in a room full of 100 say that 2+2-4, and you are the only one screaming that it actually equals 5, well...you should probably re-evaluate yourself. Just looking out for ya.

Really? How exactly did UNC overachieve? Preseason ranking, I believe, was 11.

  • TruthBKnown Banned Again01 Mar 18, 2013
    Sports Legend

State WAY underachieved this year. Carolina overachieved. And we're at roughly the same place (if you're a link and stat nerd). Similar results in the ACC tournament, similar final records (both conference and overall).

But Carolina's been consistent in a way that should be troubling to their fans. Don't beat anybody great, but simply take care of the bottom feeders, and win a few middle-grounders (but ONLY at home).

State has underachieved and lost a few that they never should have lost. But we've also risen to the occasion and won some great games. Our problem has been INCONSISTENCY. When we show up, not many teams are going to stop us. When we come out sluggish, we can blow it against anybody. I don't like this, but I believe this State team has been playing for the big dance. And now we're here. And we're playing well when we have fresh legs. We'll have fresh legs from here on out.

I'll take State over Carolina all day long. You're not going far with a four-guard lineup.

I also like our bracket over Carolina's. Carolina isn't beating 1-seed Kansas in Kansas City. They probably aren't even beating Villanova. I like State over Temple, and 1-seed Indiana is 3-3 in their last six games. They can be beaten.

I believe the NCAA selection committee punished Indiana's recent losses by making them face NC State (or even Temple) in the second round. (I heard that from an analyst, and I agree). If we're honest, that is actually a pretty tough game for a #1 seed to get in their second game. Number one seeds normally get to cruise to the sweet sixteen. Say whatever smack talk you want to say, but NC State will not be a cruise for them, even if they win.

We've all seen both play this year. You can gather all the statistics you want to try to make yourselves feel better. But we all know State is the better team.

I'm happy with that. My concern is just getting past Indiana so we roll to the Final Four.
