Well, yes, it has been going on for almost three years, still remember where I was when I saw the ESPN scroll that UNC's football program was being investigated. Love Vegas.

And, from the UNC perspective, we are moving on. The NCAA has been here, the Martin report is issued, what else should we do? As much as there are scenarios for things getting worse, there are also scenarios for things being over.

The ABC'ers and Red Ragers want this to drag on. The folks at UNC want it to be over.

Only time will tell who will get their wish.

Personally, I never let anonymous, delusional, and in some cases mentally challenged strangers on the internet dictate what I should do, or how I should feel, in any given situation, under any circumstances.

(No matter how urgently they counsel me on those very things.)

I like to make those calls for myself.

    Hey, maybe that's just me.

Oh ok. I figured you'd also agree with me that your initial point was that UNC was moving on and that the scandal has been going on for nearly 3 years too. I would think that if you're still having to wait to see what happens next, you aren't in any position to move on.

Well, the only thing I can agree with is the part about my being an intelligent person and I do appreciate that.

Again, I have no idea what will happen next, hence my comment about time will tell. Until then, I'm not going to worry about the "cloud of doubt" that the ABC'ers and Red Ragers hope for.

I'll wait to see what actually happens.

^^ABC'ers remind me of the little Japanese man who hid out in the jungle, isolated and alone for decades, thinking World War II never ended.

(Wasn't there an episode of Gilligan's Island about that?)

    Poor state college ABC'ers.

Your point was that UNC was in the process of moving on. They have been trying to move that process forward for nearly 3 years - wanting it to be over and trying to move on. This is not even close to being over with the attention the scandal is getting and with the investigations still taking place. You are an intelligent person and should be able to see that there are many probable scenarios that would keep this scandal going for months or years to come, simultaneously keeping UNC unable to move on.

Maybe there is a reason for that.

Keep in mind, Forbes could write a 75-word blurb on the cost of tuition at "Public Iveys", and the ABC crowd would scream that it implicated Governor Martin in a massive John Swofford-led conspiracy to keep "state college down".

Thanks....basically that article is just a reprint of what Kane alledged in his article.

I'll wait to see what the SBI has to say when the investigation is complete. I'm sure there will be criminal charges for the AA Studies Head and Administrator.

    Time will tell.

I'm sure the SBI agent who's been on UNC full-time for nearly a year is going to be quietly walking away from all of this too. And I'm sure Willingham was the only one who was willing to talk.

Actually, I was able to find an commentary from the Sporting News website that questioned the report. It was not based on specific facts, just the opinion of the writer.

So far, the only articles I have found in USA Today and Forbes online are reporting the results of the report, but I haven't found articles in those publications questioning the findings.

I definitely would not be holding my breath on this one.

We've all seen the way the ABC crowd makes stuff up, posts it, then slaps each other on the back for their made-up "truths", then demands we prove them wrong, then demands we "meet them in the parking lot" when they get mad. lololOLOL!!!!

Stuff like: Fedora leaving, Roy retiring last month, Banners down by last Thanksgiving, Butch giving his son a shcolly, state college being relevant in sports, etc. etc. I imagine they will be making stuff up about the "scandal" for years to come. Should be fun.

The list of their delusional fantasies...which some would call outright LIES...is endless!

    Good times.

And, are Dave Ridpath (Ohio Univ prof & former compliance officer) and Gerald Gurney (OK prof and head National Assoc Academic Advisors for Athletes) Green and Crimson Ragers?

Alas, it is the ABC'ers and Red Ragers who seemed to be mired in the mud. And, it would appear, unlikely to free themselves any time soon.

Dan Kane and the N&O has lost all credibility as a reporter of facts. This latest article by them admits that they are cherry picking facts to advance their agenda. Martin has outlined the problems he found and UNC is shoring up these issues. Leave the haters behind to rant and rave all they want while UNC moves onward and upward.

  • Metta World Biff Jan 3, 2013

UNC has screwed the pooch in so many ways over the last 3 years but in this particular case, Kane has egg on his face. His own documentation contradicts his premise and conclusion. I'll give him the benefit of the doubt and say he is confused on this one.

All I'm doing is DEbunking the quote you put up from IC... it made lil sense, because it was talking about athletics as though it wasn't implied.

  • chapelthrillv2 Jan 3, 2013
    Sports Legend

    View quoted thread

It is entirely relevant. Kane claimed that UNC never discussed something, and then released documents which proved that his claim was false. He either flat out lied or didn't read the documents before he published them.

    Sports Legend

    View quoted thread

and my stance is that the ONLY reason the investigation came to fruition in the first place was to CHECK the possibility that athletes were abusing the courseS.

so, whether his premise was that or not, is completely irrelevant.

  • chapelthrillv2 Jan 3, 2013
    Sports Legend

    View quoted thread

Negative. Read both of the PDF files Kane posted. His entire premise is that UNC never discussed the potential for athletes to abuse self-study courses. Except...the very minutes he posted show that UNC did indeed discuss that potential, on more than one occasion. In essence, he either got lazy or got dumb and posted documents that destroy his argument. Either way, it is hilarious.

the ENTIRE reason for the "review" where the minutes came up, is ATHLETICS.

    Found this on IC-

"I just read the minutes that Kane specifically uses to "debunk" Martin's claims. The portion that is most relevant is when the minutes state, "Based on this review, the committee did not feel that the level of independent study registration by student-athletes reflects abuse of the opportunity."

Now a reasonable person would ask themselves, 'Self, why would the committee specifically say that the actions of the athletes did not constitute abuse if no one raised a red-flag about potential abuse?' Does the committee typically say that, after "further reviewing" the data no abuse was found in regards to other issues? Why was this "further reviewing" necessary if it wasn't discussed as a potential problem previous to the meeting in question?

Granted, that's what a reasonable person would ask themselves."

Strike...what is it, seven? For Kane.

Kane called Martin's bluff that the meeting minutes clearly stated that the subject matter was discussed. The N&O has now posted the meeting minutes and have asked all to read. The minutes do not back up Martin's claim.

Furthermore, one of the members who Kane relied upon was the committee chairman Dr. Stanley Mandel and former Chancellor James Moser. Why did Martin discredit the chairman and UNC's Chancellor? Martin said that Lissa Broome stated that he got it right. Now Broome is stating she doesn't recall the subject being discussed.

Martin has opened a can of worms and legitimized Kane by responding to the N&O. The NCAA or a real independent investigator would have allowed their report to stand on it's own and never have played a point-countpoint with a newspaper. Martin is starting to sound like a defense attorney than an alledged independent investigator.

Again, a major mistake by Thorp. Should have never appointed Martin given he and Dottie had too many ties to the university.
