Who Is Panicking?
Who Is Panicking?
I keep hearing that there is panic in Chapel Hill. Why? Because UNC is having a bad season and may not make the NCAA Tournament? Ridiculous. Some Heels fans have become so conditioned to winning, that they cannot accept the fact that teams, especially at UNC, have up and down seasons. Relax Heels fans and enjoy the ride. Life is too short to get bent out of shape over a less than stellar basketball season! That being said, GET IT TOGETHER HEELS!!
GO HEELS!!!!

Well said. In the grand scheme of things, does it REALLY matter?
You guys are spoiled. Try going 11 years without being in the dance. At State, we still appreciate the little things, like "just being in the conversation" again. That's not to say we don't want more than that. But we've learned to appreciate the successes, big or small. Because we (of all fan bases) know it can always be worse!
GO PACK!!!
RE: Who Is Panicking?
A bad season for a team that has as much talent as UNC is only making it to a sweet 16. With last night's loss, people are starting to panic because they are getting closer to having to beat Duke and State at least once each to qualify for the NCAAs at all.
IMO, last night was not a bad loss because Miami should finish in the Top 4 of the conference this season with or without Reggie Johnson. Losing to UVa was a bad loss. I think the most alarming thing about these two losses is that the other teams aren't doing anything special but they're both dictating tempo and the reason why they beat UNC was as much to do with UNC's unforced errors as it was them playing about average because they "brought their A-game" to beat UNC.

A couple of things... Miami might be good/decent/whatever. But losing to them AT HOME is a bad loss for a team hoping to make the post season. Miami is not a great team. Good, not great.
If Carolina can't beat a Miami team at home, what are they going to do on the road? And if this was a one-time thing, a minor upset, they could write it off as a "WTH" moment. But these losses are all pretty ugly, and now there are five of them. And the schedule ain't getting any easier!
Secondly, the season is quickly falling apart, and they don't have any reason (yet) to have hope that things can change. There are better teams than Miami remaining on their schedule.
I think they have very good reason to panic.

I DON'T agree with that. Last year, GT won 4 conference games. One of them was AT State. Yeah, we got them back in Atlanta, but, we laid an ugly egg with them in Raleigh. How did it hurt us?

It didn't hurt us because we were better than that. It was a WTH moment. Teams are going to have them from time-to-time.
There is nothing about Carolina's play to give them any hope for improvement. They look lost out there, like deer in headlights. They have youth that seems to not know what to do.
We had hope, despite a WTH loss or two. Carolina is losing left and right to average teams, and sometimes pretty badly.
Sure, they beat UNLV. But I don't count that as something to give them hope. Their best player was injured, and fouled out with only 12 minutes of playing time. I think it was actually a WTH moment for UNLV that they lost to this Carolina team.

My point was why wasn't a home loss to a bad GT team last year mean the same as a bad home loss to a 'good' Miami team this year, for UNC? I think ANY home loss is a 'bad' loss, when you're picked to finish in the top 3 or 4 in the conference.
RE: Who Is Panicking?
I think TB in NC makes a great point here. This is not going to be a good year for Carolina, we all know that. But we all know they will bounce right back next year. We Carolina fans need to just accept this as a season we will barely make the NCAA at best and probably instead be a strong NIT team. But again this is a one year hiccup. TBK said it very well above in that NCSU has had to endure MANY years of hardship after winning the natty with Valvano. So one year cannot be that bad. What will be interesting to me is what the wolfpack fans say after they lose the Duke and MD games back to back. After all the glorious thoughts I am sure there will be some quick excuse or rationalizations going on then. NCSU is going to have a good year but will not win the ACC nor ACC tourney and at best probably go to sweet 16. But next year they may find themselves right back where they were 2 years ago or pretty darn close to it. As TBK said they should relish this time during the brief time it shall last. Hopefully it will be a good game tomorrow and vs MD but I mentioned when I joined this group I was partial to Carolina and MD and MD is a much better team than some of you think.

Panic will lead to failure. They need to continue to work hard in practice and carry over that same work effort to the games. People panic during an emergency. This is no where near close to being a life or death situation. There should definitely be a huge sense of urgency, but not panic.
GO HEELS!
RE: Who Is Panicking?
There is way too much talent on the UNC to press the panic button right now. It might take them 2 weeks to iron it out, or if they win against FSU it will show a huge leap. If Roy doesn't teach them more about teams, and defense it could take longer.
