A Prayer for Dean Smith

RE: Classy Move by NC State Student Newspaper...no really

And very well written. Except I have a strange feeling the winds from Western Durham would be a wretched stench for ole Dean.

Amazing piece....best I have ever read about our hero, and I've read plenty. I actually teared up...gotta give huge credit for this one.

Nicely done, Hans.

Good read, however, it was not hans. He only writes for the dainty tar heel.

What a wonderful article, thanks for sharing. It certainly puts things in perspective for Saturday's game. There is so much more to life and wins and losses.

When Coach Smith was coaching, he used to get under my skin. One day I said to myself "I can't wait till Smith finally retires." After having said that, I thought for a moment and then I realized, "When coach Smith retires, I'm going to miss him."
He is still class.

Growing up an NC State fan in Pittsboro, NC, I've never cared much for the Heels, but lived right in their backyard. Despite the numerous beatings his teams gave my beloved Wolfpack, I always respected Dean Smith for his brilliance as a coach, his always gracious demeanor, and the myriad stories I would hear from people who knew or had met him about what a truly good man he was and is.

I remember reading about when UNC was just starting its coaching search after Matt Doherty, and had not yet hired Roy Williams, Larry Brown said something to the effect of "If Coach wants me to come back, I'll be there." Wow - there was a man, ~60 yrs old, winner of an NCAA championship at Kansas and an NBA championship with the Pistons, and his thoughts on the UNC job were "if Coach wants me to come back..." That just shows you how much respect and love people who were mentored by Dean Smith have for him.

I've thought the same thing about K from time to time until the Lakers came calling for him years ago. The ACC wouldn't be the same without K, and certainly the Duke/Carolina rivalry wouldn't be the same. I'm going to hate the day that K and Roy retire.

Respect

I think the reason Roy is at Carolina is due to his love and respect for Dean. Roy was happy and successful at Kansas, and had no desire to leave. He literally threw up when he was agonizing over the decision he had to make about leaving or staying at Kansas. People who played for or worked with Dean have remained loyal. I still remember when there was a special celebration of Carolina Basketball at the half during one of the games, MJ bent down and kissed the top of Dean's head. Dean is a one in a million coach and man.

That brings up an interesting question. Assuming that Roy coaches at least 5 more years who do you think the next UNC coach will be? I think Wes Miller may be a possibility.
