    That was after 2004.
As far as the 99-00 season, they were still 15-1 in league and only lost 5 games that season. Duke tends to struggle when they lose a ton of seniors, but have not had a mass exodus of underclassmen affect them much.

You're right it won't a couple of years. It was after the 99 season when Avery,Brand, and Maggette left. They struggled the following year. Was that during the same time Livingston declared before going to Duke?

I totally agree that this win wasn't a fluke; State was expected to win, and I do see State moving forward, no argument there. I think everyone has recognized how good State is this year, from the pre-season rankings to present day. State will win more than they lose coming down the stretch, that's for sure.

I never said it wasn't important to beat your rival. But we're not rushing the court over it. We're not calling for a parade just yet. :)

But for State to move forward, one of the first steps is to at least be competitive and beat your arch rivals occasionally. I was just saying this win wasn't a fluke like 2007 was. We didn't play over our heads. In fact, we played about average for us this season in a home game. This wasn't a flash in the pan win for State.

Well, sure. Lose four starters and you're going to suffer. We won't be a contender EVERY year. Even the great Carolina went to the NIT one year. But we're in the conversation now. Recruiting has got it going on. You're going to lose players every year. As long as recruiting is replacing them, you continue going forward. That's all I'm saying. There is no reason to think this is a flash in the pan. We're working on our third (or fourth?) excellent recruiting class in a row.

I don't think we'll lose EVERYBODY this year. I feel like Purvis isn't ready. And I'm not convinced Warren is planning on being a one-and-doner. I think we'll be alright.

True, but why make a t-shirt commemorating a victory over an unranked rival that you beat (and were favored to beat) in your own gym? I get that someone is trying to make a buck, but if the win was no big deal, no one would even buy the shirt.

  • jacamoe Jan 28, 2013

Yeah, I hope you don't take too much credit for the T-shirt idea Unc. It IS only so some college kids can make a buck. Just look at the beard gang. Not even associated with any win or other team. Same thing, Unc just happened to be the wheelchair and beard on this particular day. Get over yourself already.

which was the one time they struggled for a couple of seasons after a mass departure?
Couldn't be after 99 because they won the title in 01
Couldn't be after 02 because they were back in the FF in 04

I can't think of another time when Duke had a big departure of underclassmen.

It all depends on who stays in school? Example: If State loses Leslie,Brown, and maybe Purvis or Warren to early departure than those new recruits will have to carry the load for the pack next year and I don't see them being as successful as this years team will be.If they stay? They would be loaded and would help sustain the success from this year. The key is reloading every year b/c if you have one bad year in recruiting than it could spell a bad season. The one thing I will give K and Duke credit for is that they never lose more than one to early departure. The one time they did they suffered a couple seasons for it. In the new era of one and done's recruiting year in and year out is the key to any programs success and failures, Time will tell on the new and improved Wolfpack program.

The difference, and what you Heels need to understand, is there was a VERY big difference between this game and Sid's win in 2007. Sid won in a MONUMENTAL upset. This was no upset. This was because of recruiting and hard work. State won with more talent, and was EXPECTED to win.

We won't win them all. We certainly won't beat Carolina 13 games in a row. But what you all need to realize, is this is a different State program now. We no longer have bad coaches, ADs and chancellors tolerating mediocrity. We have re-joined the party. We will win some, and we will lose some. But from this point forward, State is not the sure win you used to mark on your schedule.

It's a new era, folks. There are more than two in this party now. And the way recruiting is going, you can expect it to continue going forward.

I'm an NC State fan. The t-shirt is really lame. Good luck the rest of the season UNC'ers. I hope you guys make the NCAA's as long as you don't beat State in the process. I would like to see the ACC return to its former glory. State and UNC have talent coming in the next 2 years. Should be interesting.

  • Wolfpackindahizzy4shizzy Jan 28, 2013

in 10 years from now, State will be making the same claim. they've made it before, Everette Case caused many a tar hole fan nightmare.

it will have become, OLD HAT. it took unc about 10 years to distance itself from State, along with Duke, back in the early 90's, then they sustained it another 10. The Pack has the younger coach now, with p*ss and vinegar running through his veins.... and, he can recruit. that's what is really scaring the pansies, for they know, that withOUT the best talent, their coach is scr*wed!... I hope roy coaches another 10 years, while I much prefer, that K retires sooner.

    Go PACK!

Carolina has had a great program for a long, long time. And no doubt that they are a standard that many teams try to measure to. But Heel fans need to understand that this year aint it and UNC will be fortunate to make the NCAA. It is hard to understand the peaks and valleys that this program has had over the last decade and the one-and-done of college basketball has had some effect. However, other schools have avoided those peaks and valleys even with the one-and-done. But i would agree, if you can't win this year, talk about history - there are some tar heel fans that will certainly listen.

  • Tizu Jan 28, 2013

"Can't talk about what's happening now? Bring up history!"

Says all UNC fans - always.

  • WeHaveSixBanners Jan 28, 2013

Relax. There's nothing to get upset about.

It happens. Heck, Lowe had a win over Carolina -- and we know how that ended.

I know it's hard to understand how a single 8 point victory against an opponent that has beaten you 19 of the last 21 times is a big deal.

We don't know what that's like.

Did you notice all the former NC State players in the crowd reliving their former glory while former UNC players do big things in the NBA?

    This is all they have.

Yeah, we'll catch heat for "talking history" after a loss like this. But that's because a win over UNC would've actually been impressive 4-5 years ago.

Beating a young, unranked Carolina team is something to celebrate for NC State. Let them have it.

North Carolina is still the bar at which college basketball is set.

And although they might not have rushed the court, they did make t-shirts celebrating the win. And that's worse.

    It's down-right pathetic.

If I had a t-shirt commemorating every victory over NCSU I'd need another closet.

The natural order of things will eventually be restored.
