I feel the same way. No one can be in front on Dean Smith. I admire what he did to change this game more than any other. Coach K is my favorite today. I respect greatness. But. Dean Smith is, and will be my all-time favorite coach in any Sport.

A reporter asked Roy about Dean during today's presser, and Roy spoke so fondly and respectfully about Dean. Then, he just couldn't say anymore; it was too upsetting for him. This is so sad, and I dread the day when Dean passes.

unc70. I have always respected how you write on here. You know how to keep it real, especially in regard to involving people at UNC. I met Coach Smith after a football game up there, and we shook hands and talked a little. He and his wife were as down to earth as any you would meet. (Derrick Fenner ran for a bunch that day.) It will be a sad day when the Dean leaves all of us fans.

My wife is going through this with her mother. We have been together for almost 24 years. So, I have seen this coming on for a while. I wouldn't want this to happen to anyone. God Bless Dean, his family, friends and UNC fans. I am sure this must be very hard for the Uiversity and anyone he dealt with all those years. He is, and will always be an ICON.
Rivalries are fun (this is the best one of all time) and we all rag each other.
But, in God's eyes we are all his children. And when things like this happen we are all the same. Sad...very sad. :(

Agreed, Ligg. Dean is a one-in-a-million man, and Coach. We're lucky we got to see him coaching the sport he loved.

Thanks UNC70! We are all hanging in there together while we support him in these times. He did great for us whikle he was at the plate.

Thank you Jgunn! and Sorry to hear Mr. Lux!

Amazing what Dean could do during his time though. His teams always played together without superstars. His teams always looked like well oiled basketball machines.

Thanks jgunn...my folks are fortunate to have a pretty solid support system around them, which is huge. A lot of people are far worse off, you just have to keep things in perspective and do the best you can.

    Kato - great Dean story!

I always knew Dean was a puffer, and as a former one myself, I know how ashamed he must of felt because of those things. As much as I rag you UNC fans, I do respect the hell out of that man and what he did for our great (well, used to be at least) conference.
This story really tugs at the heart because it is one of the saddest things to have to witness. I feel for Dean, but most of all I feel for his friends and family because they catch the brunt of the side effects from these types of diseases. Coach Gut is a true friend, and the type of friend that we all want to have.
God bless Coach Smith and his friends and family. The suffering will one day end and they can all meet back up later on and none of this will be remembered, only the good times.

    Side story.

kato use to take a shortcut from Morrison dorm to classes that took him behind Carmichael. On several occasions, he would see a semi-hiding Dean puffing a cigarette (a habit he was not proud of). Once, kato saw him and his then new (and young and quite attractive) wife step out of a limo and rush into the back-entrance. Pretty cool to know that in addition to being one of the greatest college coaches of all time, he was a real person with vices and challenges like the rest of us.

I'm so sorry, Ligg. I read your posts every day on here, yet had no idea what you're going through in your personal life.

Lux, I'm sorry you're going through the same situation with your Dad. It would be wonderful if some good could come out of what Dean and Pat Summit are going through. Alzheimer's is such a horrible disease, robbing people and their families of their memories and lives.

Thanks so much for this, 903. I think of Coach a lot, since we're in the meat of basketball season, and it's with a mix of tremendous respect and appreciation, but also sadness. I dread the day we'll get the sad news that the best man to coach college ball has passed away.

Terrible disease. My parents or grandparents never had it, thank God. Sad the great man goes out like this.

I lost my mother to this. I absolutely would not wish it on my worst enemy. I sincerely hope some manner of cure or preventative can be found soon. No person should have to go "that way".

    Same here Ligg.

Maybe Dean will leave his mark with Alzheimer's research the way V did with cancer and Yow w/breast cancer.

He could team up with Pat Summitt, who has early onset and is only in her 50s I think.

I had the fortunate pleasure to meet Mr. Smith about 15 years ago, what a great man he is. I was a young 20's something kid doing my job and he talked to me like he had known me for years and was part of his family. There's just something about him that, when you are around him, makes you know there's something special about him...hard to explain. He's just the kind of person that if it wasn't college basketball, he would have made an impact doing something else. It was a brief interlude, but one I'll never forget.

It is really tough for all those around him. The great coaches remember essentially every play from every game. Think about a coaches show with Woody and Smith (or Guthridge or Williams). Every play so vivid, so alive -- now for Dean, fading from view.
