JMM: 9pts, 8 rebs, 1-5 from the stripe, team lost because he can't make free throws.

Mason: 18pts, 11 rebs, 6-8 from the stripe, team won because he made free throws.

So, why would he be upset exactly? Did you catch the post game interview? He looked pretty happy to me, as he should be.

Losing to the #2 team on their home court by 5 points is okay in my book! Especially with the way they got beaten like a drum at Miami last week! Troll somewhere else. You may find someone that you can get upset! LOL!

heh heh! It's not that complicated. The spread is what it is. Just know that the spread sometimes changes, but when you make your bet, you are locked in on the spread at the time of the bet. It's kind of like a stock. You buy the stock at the going rate. Tomorrow, the stock price can be higher or lower. But you still paid whatever you paid for it.

Most people that gamble ARE broke -- they didn't build them huge casinos from LOSING money!

  • TruthBKnown Banned Again01 Feb 13, 2013

They also consider public opinion. E.g., if the Dallas Cowboys are playing, well, anyone, they know a certain percentage of gamblers are going to bet on America's Team regardless of how good they are. Likewise, people are less likely to bet on an "unknown" team, even if they are good, because they aren't familiar with them. Things like that factor into the spread.

But where the house advantage comes in is in "the juice". When gamblers WIN a bet, the casino only pays out, say, 90% of what they bet. So if they bet $100, and their team wins, they only get paid $90 (plus they get to keep their original $100). However, when gamblers LOSE, they lose the full amount. So if there is equal betting on both sides, the house keeps ALL the losing bets, and only pays out 90% of the winning bets. So the house makes 10%. That is "the juice". The house doesn't care who wins or loses, or who is SUPPOSED to win or SUPPOSED to lose. The house only cares about the JUICE.

Unless they "know" it's going to be closer than that. Then the casinos WIN big.

True, I was trying to keep it as simple as possible for JG. She always posts about not understanding the whole spread thing.

You're right, if betting gets too skewed in favor of one team, then Vegas realizes the spread needs to entice betting on the other team. So they will increase or decrease the spread as needed to get the bets on the other team.

At least in my opinion, the early line is more indicative of how Vegas thinks the game is going to go. What happens from then, absent unusual situations(injuries, suspensions, etc.), is driven by the flow of money.

Also keep in mind WHO sets lines for the major Vegas casinos. You are talking about a mixture of some of the brightest statisticians in the world and greatest handicappers known to man. They will always set lines to THEIR advantage (house always has the upper hand) no matter if it appears that way or not to the common gambler or even the most experienced. Just something to always keep in mind.

Thanks, Autumn. So this means Vegas doesn't want us to think the game will be a blowout, and therefore entice people to bet on Carolina - that IS interesting.

  • FourAutumn Feb 13, 2013
    Sports Legend

What Vegas "knows" is how much money is being bet on each side. And the spread is being set to even it out. If more people are betting on Duke, the spread will go from 11 to 12 to get more money on UNC.

If Vegas truly believes Duke is going to win by 15, how would they benefit by only giving UNC 11 points? Folks are going to bet heavy on Duke and the casinos lose.

  • FourAutumn Feb 13, 2013
    Sports Legend

The counter to that is that if money is pouring in on Duke to win by 11, than the line is going to move up to entice more to bet on UNC. In a perfect world, Vegas wants the same number of people winning their bet as the number losing their bet with the casino keeping the juice

  • TruthBKnown Banned Again01 Feb 13, 2013
    Sports Legend

    View quoted thread

Vegas doesn't really care if Duke covers the spread or not. The spread just determines who wins or loses their bets.

It's just a handicapping thing that enables people to bet on the losing team and still win their bets. Think about it, in a game where one team is heavily favored to win, no one in their right mind would bet on their opponent to win the game. BUT, if you add points to the underdog's score to handicap the favored team, then people can bet on them. Because they don't have to win the game. They just have to not lose by more than X amount of points.

In this case, I would expect Duke to win by 15+, if not more. So I figure more people are betting on Duke to cover that 11-point handicap than on Carolina. If Duke doesn't win by at least 11, then more people are going to lose their bets than the ones that win their bets. When I see spreads that seem pretty far off base like this one, it makes me wonder if Vegas "knows something" and are encouraging people to bet more on Duke. Sometimes I think that happens.

  • StunGunn Feb 13, 2013
    Sports Legend

    View quoted thread

This is why I don't understand bets and therefore don't bet. It should be a no brainer: if Vegas had Duke by 20, it might be harder to cover the spread. But Duke by 11??? Is that to entice more people to take the bait? Unless #23 has another year of eligibility and he'll make his debut tonight, I have NO idea how Duke is only favored by 11. This is one case where I hope what happens in Vegas DOESN'T stay in Vegas: I hope it makes its way to Durham:)
