If UNC is found guilty the NCAA will be the least of their problems, and your degree will be worthless.

This thing has certainly been stretched out longer than anyone imagined. Heck, I remember MANY posters here saying it would only last a few months....all that seems to be forgotten years later.

That would be smart, if they want to stay on The Swoff's good side.

    (Which of course they DO.)

And I hope that UNC is not trying to cover anything up for their sake.

This is beginning to be yesterday's news. I think UNC is trying to correct the problems. And I agree with one of the previous posters that the NCAA is going to do zero. I would like to point out that because basketball teams are smaller, it is easier for coaches and their staff to keep track of the academic progress of the players so I'm not surprised that the basketball team is not in trouble. Football teams are much harder to deal with, but not impossible if enough measures are put in place, which was clearly not the case with UNC's team.

I agree. The SACS is certainly a serious concern. Even a warning would be a problem, though based on the UVA experience, maybe less than I fear.

There are still a lot of issues to be resolved, starting with the criminal investigation. Lots of shoes still to drop on this millipede -- probably not limited to just Chapel Hill. Almost no one seems to realize that all the UNC campuses will be put under similar scrutiny now. Most of the new tracking systems now at other schools (e.g. ECU) were already in place at Carolina and missed this. Carolina has spent a decade getting the computer tracking systems in place for these functions and to deal with things like grade inflation. Only recently could the data be accessed in the ways that were needed. Pages in file cabinets weren't good enough.

This should have been noticed earlier by someone at Carolina, but only if someone had happened to notice something before the NYT article made the issue visible, but even then the risk seemed minimal. I think the odds are high that there are some kind of problems that will be found at a couple of other campuses over the past decade. Maybe not on the same scale, but would be naive to think nothing irregular elsewhere. The BOG has to be thinking in those terms and about the impact on the whole UNC System.

  • SpartanDude Feb 13, 2013

Does anyone really believe that UNC is destined to be shut down? That's pure nonsense. They have demonstrated resilience and will eventually survive their academic scandal. As someone who did not attend UNC, I am dismayed at their behavior in the past decade or so, but can we get past this already? It's old news and the NCAA won't do anything.

The University was NOT given a warning or any other sanction in December. UVA received a warning, not UNC. UNC is under close monitoring.

The outside SACS team will report its findings to the commission board, which could take action in June. A university could receive a warning, or worse, probation. After that could come a loss of accreditation, which likely would mean the death knell for a college or university, because it would no longer eligible to receive federal financial aid dollars. A shutdown would be inevitable.

The University was given a warning in DECEMBER
More action to follow in JUNE
