The sad part is that money, TV revenues, and all that corrupt this great game....always comes down to the almighty dollar. I like the ACC as it is right now. No way it will stay together.

UNC was the 1st in our great State. I believe they have earned the right to be called the "Flagship." There is no University in our great State nor the ACC that has graduated as many top people from all walks of life to excel in their chosen field/careers than UNC-CH. The Stars are shining on UNC when is comes to this one. I didn't know this until unc70 posted this a few years ago. All Universities can also name how the stars changed their schools. Rich History will never be replaced from any of the schools. Withers was a good guy; but he missed this one.

UNC, Duke, Wake, State, and UVA will always be a part of the ACC. Who knows about the rest.

Methinks Wolfpocalypse now is hurting after being forced to eat his earlier statement:

"So, to use the term "flagship" to describe any one of NC's public universities is seen as rude and condescending, as well as being factually indeterminable. No wonder only Tarholers use it. "

Fantastic citations, lil' buddy. Wikipedia, opinions printed in newspapers, conclusory statements with no support or analysis, etc. You've really built quite the body of evidence to support your contentions there - great job! If you find them to actually be authoritative, persuasive, or factually incontestable, you REALLY must have gone to Orange County Remedial College. You may have received a second-rate education, but at least you aren't a bandwagon Tarholer like most of your lower-primate comrades on this site.

    From Wikipedia-

"The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (also known as UNC, UNC-Chapel Hill, Chapel Hill, North Carolina, or simply Carolina)[14] is a coeducational public research university located in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, United States. It is the flagship institution of the University of North Carolina and the second largest university in North Carolina. "

Our public university system does not have a flagship university. To say that one of the sixteen public schools is the "best" or "most important" is purely a matter of opinion.

As one of your fellow bandwagon Tarholers said:

"Those of us in 'systems' of higher education are frequently actively discouraged from using the term 'flagship' to refer to our campuses because it is seen as hurtful to the self-esteem of colleagues at other institutions in our systems."

Oh. My. God. The feeble-mindedness of you subhuman, bandwagon Tarholers is astonishing.

Your absurd "rebuttal" does not include the word flagship in reference to UNC-Chapel Hill. It simply makes the same factually correct statement that I made before, that UNC is the oldest public university in the state (and arguably in the country, but take that issue up with UGA fans and alumni). Being the oldest, or first chronologically, does not make UNC the "flagship" of the NC public university system.

Since you clearly don't understand the meaning of the word "flagship," I'll give you the definition: "the best or most important one of a group or system."
    http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/flagship

Do you see ANYTHING in that definition about a flagship being the oldest or original entity in a group or system? Calling UNC the "flagship" of the UNC system is a matter of opinion; it is NOT an objectively-determined fact. The fans and alumni might feel like it is the flagship institution, but it is not officially deemed so as a factual matter.

The first public institution of higher education in North Carolina, the school opened its doors to students on February 12, 1795.

The 1931 session of the General Assembly redefined the University of North Carolina to include three state-supported institutions: the campus at Chapel Hill (now the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill), North Carolina State College (now North Carolina State University at Raleigh), and Woman's College (now the University of North Carolina at Greensboro). The new multi-campus University operated with one board of trustees and one president. By 1969, three additional campuses had joined the University through legislative action: the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, the University of North Carolina at Asheville, and the University of North Carolina at Wilmington.

Pretty simple: First school in the system.

Flagship. Nothing AT ALL to do with Everett Withers ROFL

    Hope this helps.

Feel free to give me a history lesson, if I am incorrect. I never heard you bandwagon Tarholers claiming to be "the flagship" until after Withers made that statement - which Tom O'Brien's team proceeded to cram down his big, fat, stupid throat.

So go ahead, putz. Give us a history lesson explaining the origin of this "flagship" term as it relates to UNC.

UNC has been the FLAGSHIP of the state university system since long before Withers was born, and will be long after he's dead. (btw, that "loser" had a higher winning % than Opie had coaching your girls).

So, you actually believe that no undergrad student from any college will be seen as an asset to a potential employer? Sad.
