But this was in December and the draft wasn't until July. The jeweler must have been confident (based on the credit application) that Lance, or someone on his behalf, would be able to obtain the remainder in 15 days. Wait! Now I understand! He was going to get it from Santa!

Also, if he was a named beneficiary on someones account he could have got funds that way. Which also means that the funds wouldn't pass through probate and wouldn't be subject to public record.

It could have been a gift from a family member that wasn't a member of his immediate family. Let's wait and see the results of the investigation before making assumptions.

Yeah, we were just discussing the down payment, and the possibility of where he could have obtained it from.

Oh, we are not talking about the deal with the jeweler.

The question was about how he got the 30k for the downpayment and the suggestion was that he got an unsecured loan for 30k to make that payment.

  • chapelthrillv2 Feb 19, 2013
    Sports Legend

Unemployed college students from blue-collar families, particularly single-parent blue collar families, don't just but $120k in jewelry. Lance was getting paid by someone.

You also have to take into consideration the terms of the loan. He promised to pay the balance in 15 days. Where does a college student with no income get $67,000 dollars in that amount of time. If he had a co-signer the jeweler would have sued the co-signer as well.

  • thatrollslayer Feb 19, 2013

And I just offered it up as a possibility. Which it certainly is possible, don't you agree?

  • thatrollslayer Feb 19, 2013
    Sports Legend

    View quoted thread

I would agree to that point, however, we don't know what his financials really look like, or what his past credit history looks like. So to say yes or no for sure would be impossible without knowing the entire financial picture aka "the variables".

  • FourAutumn Feb 19, 2013

You started the entire "unsecured" theory.....not me.

If a 30k unsecured loan is high risk for ANYONE, it is likely more so for a college student with NO INCOME, wouldn't you think?

With an 810, most dealerships will streamline you into their best APR brackets. I would see what they ofer you on the lot and compare that with your bank.

I have an 810 score at the moment. How much can I get? I just bought a car for myself, but would like to get one for my wife also.

  • FourAutumn Feb 19, 2013
    Sports Legend

Heck we don't even know that he took out a loan for the 30k.

All we know is a college kid showed up and purchased 97k in jewelery and didn't pay back the 70k within 15 days.

Seems like a lot of folks willing to take on that risk.

  • thatrollslayer Feb 19, 2013
    Sports Legend

    View quoted thread

A 30k unsecured loan to ANYONE is a high risk loan, especially when you don't consider all the variables, which you are convienently leaving out.

  • FourAutumn Feb 19, 2013
    Sports Legend

    View quoted thread

I am not ignoring them at all. A 30k unsecured loan for a college kid is a high risk loan to almost any lender, except yours.

    Again, good luck with that.

  • thatrollslayer Feb 19, 2013
    Sports Legend

    View quoted thread

That depends on a number of things, many of which I have outlined and you are still ignoring for some reason. When you choose to look at the bigger picture, I would be glad to debate the topic further.

Edit: And just for the sake of arguing, what if he had a co-signer on the loan? Do we know that he did or didn't have one?

  • FourAutumn Feb 19, 2013
    Sports Legend

    View quoted thread

And you are just looking at the fact he went to Duke.

You tell me a college student coming today into your office with no current income and asking for 30k is going to walk out with the cash?

    Again, good luck to you.

  • FourAutumn Feb 19, 2013
    Sports Legend

    View quoted thread

Again, a lending company that is going to give a college student 30k with no current income, unsecured, is taking a huge risk, I don't care what their score is.

  • Tar Heels Victory-Show No Mercer Feb 19, 2013
    Sports Legend

    View quoted thread

It sounds like your company is into high risk loans. It would make NO sense to give a college student, with no job that much money. And we wonder why the country is in a financial crisis. You must work for a pay day lender.

  • thatrollslayer Feb 19, 2013
    Sports Legend

    View quoted thread

Depends on what other debts he has to pay and what his monthly payments would be. Again, your not looking at the whole picture, just the pieces you choose to.

  • thatrollslayer Feb 19, 2013

Multiple credit cards with utilization rates of 30-40%, car loan, etc. Not hard really, and perfectly achievable for todays college student.

Also, you do realize 850 is a perfect beacon, making 800 nearly flawless? And most lenders will streamline with scores smaller than that. So really he could have probably got approved 750+ beacon and some good past credit history.

  • FourAutumn Feb 19, 2013
    Sports Legend

    View quoted thread

A college student with no current flow of income taking out two loans, one with you, one with a jeweler, for $97,800 sounds good to you, in your position?

    Good luck with that.

They did get it right. And alongside that story was the story of a Pack player being arrested for DWI. Where is your beef with them?

  • thatrollslayer Feb 19, 2013
    Sports Legend

    View quoted thread

I do unsecured lending for a living, and can tell you that my company has loosened lending guidelines significantly in the past couple years, and many others have well. That involved lowering beacon scores for streamlining potential, lowering income requirements, etc. Not realy sure how else to put it, but you couldn't be more wrong. When it comes to mortgage lending, things have tightened, not personal lending.

  • FourAutumn Feb 19, 2013
    Sports Legend

Really? A score of 800, huh? How much credit did you have? How long had the accounts been opened?

most college kids don't even approach 800...it takes more than prompt payments to get to 800.

  • FourAutumn Feb 19, 2013
    Sports Legend

    View quoted thread

LOL...nice. Just FYI, your second theory is an NCAA violation.

And regarding #3, banking guidelines have, actually, tightened. Banks figured out that making good loans was more important than just making loans.

    but nice try.

  • thatrollslayer Feb 19, 2013
    Sports Legend

    View quoted thread

Thats an easy one. First, the bank might know im and his family, and know they are good people who pay back their loans. Second, they might take into account his future prospects, or his future salary in order to compute total repayment ability. Third, in todays economy banks/credit unions are in dire need to make loans, so underwriting guidelines have been loosesned significantly to make loans. Should I keep going?

Edit: Oh yeah, and for all you know he might have a beacon score of 800. I did when I was in college. In that case, they would probably just streamline him for approval.
