State is the great oak that keeps the UNC "taproot" buried in the dark, damp soil underneath it.

We are standing tall and soaking in the sunshine while the taproot is undeground sucking mud.

    LOL

    TAPROOT:

a straight tapering root growing vertically downward and forming the center from which subsidiary rootlets spring.

When it comes to the UNC System:

    The Flagship is The Taproot.

state college is just a ROOTLET.

Oh, I'm bright if I do say so myself. It was probably INTENDED to be a compliment. But taproot?

    We're the TAPROOT, everybody!!! LOL

Carolina is probably hanging a "TAPROOT" banner as we speak! LOL

Why is everyone so interested in roots now? I think Sweet Potato tastes better. The Taproot is too chewy.

Ya.... seems a little strange to hear someone actually wanting to be called the "taproot"... regardless of meaning. Kind of like wanting to be called the humperdink. Or the engelbert, for that matter.

Between the two, IF I were a UNC fan/alum, I'd stick with Flagship. Seriously.

Thanks The1 and wmarti....correct on both counts.

The "UNC system" hasn't been around for 200 years.

    Only The Taproot has.

(Taproot = Flagship = some mightily upset ABCers.)

It's just words, people. Don't you have better things to obsess over? LOL.

The taproot forms a center from which other roots sprout, hence, since UNC was the original all others are just offshoots.

Oh I was talking ahout what Lux said, "Link?....to the article focusing on an institution other than UNC?"

When clearly the majority of the article focuses on the system as a whole.

don't think anyone said that. the article clearly talks about both the whole system and UNC by itself.

the TAPROOT comment was obviously only about UNC @ the hill.

So where does it state the article was only talking about UNC? The article still relates to the UNC system, a "multi campus" university.

You linked the article and actually quoted the part that explains they are talking about the UNC system. This includes schools other than UNC, such as UNCW, UNCG, etc.

Are you really this dense? Or is it all for show?

The Taproot isn't concerned with the opinions of ^^typical ABC'ers.^^

The Taproot is here to educate those who wish to be educated. It has no time for haters.

The article was referring to the University of NC system (i.e., the public university system) as the "Taproot." It was not referring to the UNC-Chapel Hill campus specifically.

    ROFL!

We now have an alternate nickname for The Flagship, that might be even more ANNOYING and ANGER-INDUCING to the ABC crowd than "Flagship". LOL!

    http://www.newsobserver.com/2013/02/07/2662369/unc-system-says-strategic-plan.html#storylink=misearch

CHAPEL HILL - The UNC system aims to churn out more graduates, prod campuses to be more efficient, and spend money on research areas that may be an economic boon to North Carolina, under a five-year plan to be adopted Friday.

The UNC Board of Governors is expected to vote for the strategic plan and to ask the state legislature to spend an additional $910 million now through 2018 to implement it.

The vote Friday will begin a new chapter for UNC, which board member Charles Mercer called "the taproot of the state" for more than 200 years.

    "THE TAPROOT!!!" LOVE IT!!! loLOlOlOl
