Duke can't develop players for the NBA. It's strange, though, that...

With 15 players in the league, Duke leads, as usual. It's interesting that the NBA has so many Duke big men starting or playing so well.

Sean May ate himself out of Charlotte.

    McRoberts:

    http://blogs.charlotte.com/inside_the_nba/2013/07/bobcats-have-deal-to-re-sign-power-forward-josh-mcroberts.html

For perhaps the first time in their decade-long history, the Charlotte Bobcats have assembled a deep and solid frontcourt rotation.

Thursday the Bobcats came to terms with former Utah Jazz center Al Jefferson. Friday the front office closed a deal to re-sign power forward Josh McRoberts, who started 19 of his 26 games with the Bobcats last season after a February trade.

McRoberts is getting a two-year contract with a total value of about $5.5 million, according to an NBA source. The second of those two seasons is at McRoberts’ option.

McRoberts averaged 9.3 points, 7.2 rebounds and 2.7 assists with the Bobcats. He was particularly helpful as a high-post passer, rotating the ball to either side of the lane in a more efficient way than the Bobcats had done previous to his arrival.

I'm not talking about them. I'm talking about the work involved in determining the other 10-12 players they have to sign in order to win NBA championships. If it was simply signing those three, then they would have won the 2011 NBA title too...

It does not take a genius to evaluate talent like LeBron James and Chris Bosch, especially when they have already been playing in the league for several years. It just requires having enough money to throw at them.

I highly doubt that New Jersey is going to finish higher that Miami (barring injuries). New York is a long shot (I would not bet any money on them). As I said before, Miami has done an excellent job at managing the money aspect of the sport to be able to buy a championship caliber team.

    2013/14 NBA Payrolls

    1. Brooklyn $101,291,208
    2. New York $86,862,927
    3. Miami $83,984,300

They were able to sign the big three but putting good talent around them while staying under the salary cap takes the ability to evaluate talent. Otherwise, they would have also won the 2011 Championship instead of losing to Dallas...

I agree. So an organization that is better at managing money and re-negotiating player contracts is able to buy more talent than other teams. Miami has done a great job at that. And, as was my original point, requires a different skill set than building a team by drafting college players.

This year Miami has the third highest team salary in the NBA at $82M. This is nearly twice as much as the lowest team (Cleveland) at $49M. This years "salary cap" is $58.679M. That is why I say that the salary cap is a joke.

As for the salary cap, there are so many loopholes that it is a joke.

...those loopholes apply to all of the NBA, not just the Heat...

Even with the best talent it takes time to mold a team. Even Jordan didn't win a championship in first few years. The difference is that when you build a team by buying established talent it is more a matter of managing that talent. That is much different that building a team by drafting college players. Those players have no NBA track record to judge how they will perform on a professional level.

As for the salary cap, there are so many loopholes that it is a joke. For instance

    The Mid-Level exception:

Once a year, teams can use a mid-level exception (MLE) to sign a player to a contract for a specified maximum amount. The amount of the MLE and its duration depend on the team's cap status. The MLE is $5 million for a duration of four years for teams that are over the cap either before or after the signing, but did not pay a luxury tax in the previous season. Teams without cap room that paid tax in the previous season have an MLE of $3 million with a three-year duration. Teams with cap room, previously ineligible for the MLE, have a new MLE of $2.5 million with a two-year duration. The MLE is frozen at the stated levels through the 2012–13 season, after which it increases by 3% per season (with the percentage based on the initial amount of the exception, and not compounded

    The Bi-Annual exception

The bi-annual exception was used to sign any free agent to a contract starting at $1.672 million. Like the mid-level exception, the bi-annual exception was also split among more than one player, and was used to sign players for up to two years, with raises limited to 8% per year. This exception was referred to as the "$1 million exception" in the 1999 CBA, although it was valued at $1 million for only the first year of the agreement.

    And there are many more.

Nope, you have to be able to evaluate talent in order to put the pieces around your three best players in order to win it all. And that's not easy to do with the three guys on max contracts and a salary cap.

A team consisting of LeBron James, Chris Bosch, and Dewayne Wade could win if the rest of the team consisted of AAU players.

Then how'd they lose the Finals to Dallas in 2011?

The result is the same but the process and the skills involved are much different. Drafting and developing talent requires a lot more patience and long term planning that simply throwing around enough money to lure the best players to your team. ANd let's be serious here. A team consisting of LeBron James, Chris Bosch, and Dewayne Wade could win if the rest of the team consisted of AAU players.

what difference does it make whether you build thru the draft or build thru free agency? the ring is the same either way after you win the championship. And the Heat's roster is not entirely composed of "bought established talent"... Some talent evaluation was required to put the pieces around Lebron in order to put together a team able to win it all, not once but twice...

What's so funny about the new age NBA player is that there are no true champions! Look at Miami.......the players had to conspire to build a team just to win it all. Classic example of a paper champion.

Jordan, Magic, Bird. they had teams built around their greatness! I'm not impressed at all with Miami and their championships. Their winning in a all time extremely weak NBA!
