Well, actually, no removal of the title, no legal action and the jeweler saying it has been paid for are all proof that the transaction was on the up and up.

    Slap.

No proof that Lance bought 100K in jewelry legally

there's no reason for anyone to provide proof that it was a legal purchase since it was purchased legally. what law is broken when someone makes a private jewelry purchase?

So by your logic, any transaction that is not fully vetted in the media is illegal. Make sure you report EVERY purchase you make to WRAL. Don't forget to include receipts and affidavits. We'd hate for you to be a hypocrite now.

There's nothing that makes any of Duke's titles illicit. Now if you guys want to stop hiding behind FERPA and let people examine the transcripts of the 1993, 2005, and 2009 teams to determine how many of these guys were in the bogus AFAM classes you designed to keep guys eligible we can really have a conversation about illicit.

Sure there is tiny. A little hot tub picture on 91, a stomp in 92, a paid player in '10. Fact: K had been shown considerations by the NCAA that other programs were denied. If there is nothing to hide with Lance, why are the records sealed with no disclosure an agreement of the settlement? Innocent people need no such agreements.

Man, talk about someone that is butthurt. I guess the 2009 title is null and void because of the pictures with fats.

And what does a hot tub picture prove.

Pretty obvious your prison guarding hasn't made you any smarter.

tiny... you can always tell the strength of one's argument when they resort to the ad hominem route.

The "consideration" that K has been shown by the NCAA is that they've treated him no differently than they would any other coach which just makes people crazy because they want so badly to find something that's just not there.

So a picture of Richie Perry with with the UNLV players... how does one get to that being proof of a game being fixed? Why, since the Vegas line in that game was over 10 points, would UNLV still be shaving points when they were tied or only up 3 points?

Laettner's stomp on Timbulake hardly met the threshold of the flagrant foul that would have been necessary for ejection and it was certainly less malevolent than the elbow that Rasheed Wallace threw at Riddick of Kentucky a couple of years later.

And as for records being sealed... how do you know that wasn't stipulated by the plaintiff? You do realize that keeping the terms of a settlement confidential are fairly standard in civil proceedings don't you? And if you're going to go with the innocent people need no such arrangements approach why doesn't UNC provide the redacted transcripts of their teams to the NCAA instead of hiding behind FERPA? Why don't the players waive their FERPA rights?

You'd be left with a couple of ancient pieces of linen and a bogus Helms banner...

I'm not a college basketball player with no obvious source of income who somehow suddenly has $30,000 to spend and somehow obtains a $70,000 loan, two circumstances that obviously raise a question of impermissible benefits, and then, when the matter is publicized, refuses to discuss it, further raising suspicion among objective observers. If I'm ever in that position, get back to me.

When John Henson was at UNC he was driving around in a new Chevy Yukon worth $40K. Did the NCAA have the right to demand proof of where the money for that vehicle came from? Does simply having something constitute enough grounds to open an investigation?

The issue with Thomas should never have been where the down payment came from unless there was adequate indication it originated from sources outside his family or friendships that originated after he was identified as a potential college athlete.

The only issue is if the loan from the store was based on Thomas' potential future earnings as an athlete which is far from a certainty. Given Thomas' modest regard in the basketball world at the time (he was averaging just 5 ppg and went on to spend the next 2 years in the D league earning $25K a year) and the terms of the contract (demanding payment in a matter of days) it seems unlikely that would be the case.

And the 30K from someone who during the same period could not afford his rent was an issue, especially since his mother was only making 50K or so a year at the time.

What indication do you have that Lance Thomas' family didn't have any money? What do you have to show that his mother was only making $50K a year? Given that the median hourly wage for assembly line workers at the Big 3 plans is $27 which works out to $56K annually it would seem rather odd that someone in management would be making less than that. Especially someone who lives in a town where the median household income is $97K.

And, as 903 pointed out, Thomas' mother wasn't his only relative. As Jeff Goodman wrote at the time, Thomas' uncle Monty was a business owner who made certain that his nephew didn't lack for anything.

Finally, terrific work on that rent stuff. You would almost have a point if by "during the same period could not afford his rent" you meant "a few months after he couldn't afford his rent." You know... actions that would be consistent with someone who blew a nest egg of cash his family had given him.

Sorry for the paragraphs - I know it can take a lot of time to sound out all those words.
