Lance was sued by a New York company based on his purchase of five pieces of jewelry at a cost of $97,800 while he was enrolled at Duke University. Rafaello & Co. extended Thomas a line of credit for $67,800 so he would have the funds to purchase the jewelry. Thomas was required to, and delivered a $30,000 down payment.

If it looks like a duck, quacks like a duck, and waggles like a duck...it is highly likely it is a duck (and endless keystrokes from bogey does not change Lance from being a duck).

    He doesn't.

But it sounds like he's calling UNC's decades of academic fraud going back to Dean Smith's first championship "a duck" or something...

So you are sayiing he went to a jewelry store put down 30k and based on that 30k down payment was given some time to pay the remainder of the bill.

Pretty simple business transaction if you ask me.

None of your business where he got the money or if the store owner agreed to let him pay the money back in a certain period of time.

    Happens every day.

Might be because they did not want to be in the public eye and Lance said it was ok they did not.

I seem to recall you saying many many many many many many that the NCAA could presume him guilty without proof.

    So why didnt they?

But since you have the answers that no one seems to have, feel free to post which relative he secretly got his money from. I mean, Lance won't and has sealed everything......but you should have no trouble.

They did it to Miami players in the same boat (graduated) but K got a pass.

Some people speculated that it might happen, but no one figures that the NCAA was so corrupt as to turn a blind eye to the rampant cheating going on in Durham with their second confirmed paid player and possibly many more.

You mean like creating an entire bogus dept to keep athletes eligible. What was it like 7 or 9 of your 2005 team were AFAM majors and Hanztravel took 3 AFAM classes.

Yeah, that is all on the up and up.

Based on markie's bellyaching, he's probably upset that UNC won't need to answer any questions about PJ's impermissible benefits with a convicted felon during his time as a UNC student-athlete. Ya know, because UNC disassociated with PJ and therefore is immune from having to tell everyone what impermissible benefits he got while attending UNC...

Wait... are you using "it was discussed on message boards" as actual substantiation of your claim of what Thomas' mother was actually making? Seriously, are you really going with that and are you simply just hoping that nobody sees how lame it is or do I actually have to ask the question of how these people on these message boards were able to substantiate their claims of what Thomas' mother made?

I mean, I can go to multiple message boards right now and see claims that the corrupt AFAM program at UNC was started in the early 1990's after Dean Smith watched Duke win back-to-back championships because he needed a sham major to keep guys eligible. That must mean it's true by your standard, right?

Had Thomas simply told us where he got the money from there would be no need to speculate. The fact that he would not and still won;t and that K is silent on the matter tells us all we need to know.
No amount of deflection or bellyaching on your part can change that fact.

The reason that the violations were not 'clear' in the case of Lance was due to no cooperation from Lance or from the jeweler as a result of the settlement.
Lance swept it up as quickly and quietly as possible.
That is the only reason that the NCAA had to drop the case.
But innocent people do that all the time...........

But that is the point though... Thomas doesn't have to show people where he got the money any more than John Henson would have to show where he got the money for his Yukon. Why is one action cause for suspicion any more than the other? Why does a college basketball player without any means of support (as you like to call Thomas) spending $30K on a down payment for gaudy jewelry have to explain where he got the cash while another college basketball player without any means of support (as you would have to call Henson as well) not have to explain where the $40K car came from?

The issue has always been if the terms of the loan would constitute an impermissible benefit and as much as you would like to reduce the conversation to simple one liners the world doesn't work like that and more complex issues require more complex thought. That's seems to be where you get off the bus.

    1. How rare/frequent is it for the resolution of a civil settlement to require parties not to disclose the terms of the settlement?
    2. In the Thomas case, were the non-disclosure terms dictated by the plaintiff or the defendant?

Kind of important questions to ask if you want to play the "innocent people will talk" card.

It's funny how the state fans take off their red hat from football season and put on their royal blue hat during basketball season. They must have a serious identity crisis, however, with state football sinking so low, maybe they should just leave the royal blue hat on year round.
