ask the boys at IC (insidecarolina), they're the ones that came up with it. I'm merely following their lead ;)

I've also heard, that butch knows of this nickname, and did not disapprove.

    Believe it.....

    Or not.

I truly believe that no man/woman is without sin nor have any doubt they can still be redeemed in the eyes of the almighty. However in the eyes of man, no greater transgression can be to betray both your God and your family, especially coming from a leader of young men. To me that pretty much disqualifies one for a very long period - if not forever from a position of leadership.
There are many other positions where Gottfried can make an honorable living and exercise his second chance. That NCSU can overlook that and stake a large amount of trust is both honorable and foolhardy at the same time..I hope it works out for them..but I just don't think Gottfried paid enough penance or restored enough trust to resurface as a coach this soon.

Aaaaaahhhhhhhhh! That hurts, stop it! You said it wouldn't hurt but it did! Aaaaaaahhhhhh!

Easy Badger, we Tarheels have been taking excessive abuse the last 2-3 weeks like a chainsaw on Swamp Loggers. Have a little back bone and toughness, I thought Badgers were supposed to be really tough. Don't give us a reason to change your avatar to a tea cup poodle.

Well the way you have been working it, your giving Gott a pass and asking for the death penalty on Butch. To be true to your philosophical rants you should be already calling for Gott's head. Nutz is just turning the tables on you, kinda like an anti-matter Badger. So in actuality Nutz is playing it just like you boys are with Butch. And how do you know that Gott did not have NINE MAJOR violations with said coed? I am sure he did not go to that well only once if he went the first time.

I don't know if I would give him the "great" coach title yet Badger but it was a "Good" hire and he has over delivered so far. I have outlined several times why I think he will be successful and grab an NCAA berth in his first year. So hopefully he makes me look like Kreskin. Plus, why not overlook those alleged indiscretions, winning is everything, right Badger?

Yes but did he have this affair while employed by Ala and break clauses in his contract and laws in Ala with regards to state employees dating students????? I think an investigation is warranted as do many in Ala - they want the money they paid that sleezeball back - this story will become hot after ball season starts and the UNC investigation is over -

I really have no interest in digging up "news" on anyone's personal transgressions. In fact, part of the reason I follow sports is to avoid the supermarket tabloid/Entertainment Tonight/Access Hollywood/TMZ type of stories. I totally understand why something like the Tiger Woods scandal captivates the nation, but that doesn't make it any more enjoyable for me to follow.

The bottom line, as TBK said, is that Gottfried already had to answer to his wife, family, close friends/advisers, etc. for any missteps in the past. Like it or not, this is indeed a country of second chances, and I'm sure he has learned quite a bit from his mistakes while at Alabama, both on and off the court.

So from this Heels fan, I say Welcome to Raleigh and the conference, Coach. Can't wait for the basketballs to be rolled out on all the Triangle courts in October. It will be interesting to see if you can return State to a place at the ACC table where it has not consistently been seated for some time.

The man isn't claiming to be Jesus Christ nor has he tried to convince anyone that his "missionary work" makes him a better man than the rest of us. He was selected in the NBA draft but instead decided to tour with Athletes in Action for 3 years, thats it. If that somehow holds him to a higher form of morality 20 years later, then maybe the NCAA/NBA should require more of todays athletes to become involved with these types of programs. Otherwise, it appears that Gottfried is simply a man who allegedly had an affair. He broke the same values and vows as every other person that has been unfaithful to their spouse, no more/no less. If you choose to judge a man based on one alleged action and despise him for it, then that is your right. On a side note, I'm guessing you aren't much of an MJ fan?

  • scousler Jul 15, 2011

My take on Gottfried is that he has always been a big BSer. While that may help his recruiting skills, what makes him really foul is that for a long time he propped himself up to be a bastion of morality, coming from Oral Roberts and continuing his "missionary" work with ministry involvement with Athletes in Action. While supposedly representing the best of us - his affair, while married, proved him to be just like the rest of us or perhaps the least of us. Looks like the only "missionary" work he was really pursuing at Alabama was the horizontal bop with young coeds. Wouldn't put my faith in a hypocrite - but hallelejuh! - let him carry the Wolfpack torch and raise it high!

I've noticed that this assertion has become quite a common fallback for the Carolina fans on this website, but I've never seen so much as 1 link to anything remotely relevant to these claims. So could one of you fine gentlemen that post under sportznut628 provide a link to inform the rest of us what exactly is going on? If not, where did you even hear it? Just curious, thanks.

I usually don't add to the lunatic fringe threads on this matter..but since I started this thread I will answer

I don't know if Butch knew anything or not, what I do know is that there has been an extensive investigation and from all accounts UNC has been forthright and cooperative. I also know that the NCAA has sent a letter and that it must be responded to by Oct something. There is a process in place that will work itself out. Anything outside of that is pure speculation pretty much instigated and kept alive by the lunatic fringe known as the NC State fan base.....as I have mentioned many times before, nothing is ever as good as it seems or AS BAD AS it seems.

This is NC State's fan base time, if I were in your shoes I would be doing the same (keeping this going etccc......) You can dismiss this but there is a lot of smoke that hasn't hit the media yet concerning, Clifton, Word of God and NC State...if that blows up ...then it will be UNC fans turn to be the lunatic fringe.

My hope is that UNC fans on here would do what I have done....don't add any fuel to the ridiculous threads that you and other bovine fans start....it is your time...have fun with it....

interesting how he KNOWS Butch Davis knew about everything going on with 75 UNC football plyers during the summer but he "don't know if Gott had the affair or not."

another interesting FACT is that this thread started as a POSITIVE for ncsuX basketball but for SOME STRANGE REASON, the lil furry one has decided to insert more UNC, Butch Davis and football into it.

    one can only wonder WHY?

    Gottfried RULES!!!

He's a pretty great coach. We're glad to have him. Thanks for the article, sportsnut!

Btw, that affair thing that is nothing proven, but maybe a lot of smoke........ why is it OK for you to believe that one, but you and so many of your cohorts defend and support Butch Davis, who has nothing PROVEN against him, but still a lot of smoke. I see a similarity there, but a very different way of viewing it from you guys.

I don't know if Gott had the affair or not. What I do know is that is between him, his wife and the co-ed in question (who is rather hot, I might add!) If he made a mistake, he's had several years to work through that and move on. And last time I checked, his affair (if it happened) is not NINE MAJOR NCAA ALLEGATIONS. So now that you've confirmed that you're willing to believe rumors and where there is smoke, there must be fire, I take it you're now going to admit that you also believe Butch knew something was going on right under his nose?

How long should we wait for such a post from you?

That article is good for a quick laugh at a rival but ultimately I want State to improve in basketball. It will make basketball in the Triangle more fun. Tobacco Road basketball with be more interesting if it becomes a 3 horse race again.

Bamafan April 6, 2011 at 11:04 am # Mark Gottfried is a terrible coach and a very bitter man. His affair was the worst kept secret in T-town, and hes continued to criticize The U of A ever since he was fired. Hes continued to criticize UA even recently, clearly enjoying the fact that Anthony Grants team was spurned by the NCAA tourney. He shouldve been canned 3 years earlier than he was. All you need to know about Mark Gottfried is this: Gerald Wallace refuses to even admit that Gottfried was his coach in college. NCST fans, I feel sorry for you.
