Chapel Hill, N.C. — North Carolina sophomore right-hander Shane Taylor was named ACC Pitcher of the Week Monday after throwing an eight-inning, one-hit gem against Duke in an emergency start Sunday.
Scheduled starter Hobbs Johnson was forced to miss the game, prompting UNC to turn to Taylor. Taylor allowed only three base runners in a 3-0 win over Duke at Durham Bulls Athletic Part as the Tar Heels clinched the ACC Coastal Division.
Taylor struck out eight in the game and retired the final 16 batters he faced to improve to 5-0 on the year. The Mullica Hill, N.J., native combined with closer Michael Morin on Carolina’s first one-hitter against an ACC foe since 2009 against Miami.
Virginia sophomore infielder Stephen Bruno was named the Atlantic Coast Conference Player of the Week after recording hits and RBI in all of four games as Virginia went 3-1 on the week. For the week, Bruno hit .400 with three extra-base hits and eight RBI.
