Angell still amazed he's the Voice of the Tar Heels

Posted May 17, 2012

North Carolina play-by-play caller Jones Angell is nearing the end of his first year of being the Voice of the Tar Heels after Woody Durham retired following the end of the 2010-11 basketball season.

“It’s weird for me because I still think of Woody so much as the Voice of the Tar Heels,” said Angell Thursday.

On June 27, 2011 Angell took on his current role as the voice of Tar Heel football, basketball and baseball.

“Just to be able to be here at a place that I love and covering teams that I really enjoy and athletes that I really enjoy, that’s been the best part for me,” said Angell. “It’s just been a lot of fun.”

Though Angell has worked for the Tar Heels Sports Network since graduating from UNC in 2001, he admitted he still has the ‘pinch me moments’.

“Especially as we went through the year and did different things,” said Angell, “like, ‘oh this is the first time I’m going to be calling an ACC tournament with Carolina or an NCAA tournament with Carolina’, it’s still amazing to me that I get to do this.”

Not to mention, the first basketball game he had to call as the new voice took place on an aircraft carrier.

“It was an unbelievable experience and one I will never forget, it was the first basketball game I did as UNC’s play by play and Carolina won, so it’s one I’ll remember forever,” said Angell.

Angell said most people ask him about his call on Duke guard Austin Rivers' fade-away to beat UNC at home but to him one of the games that stood out the most over the course of his first year, was one not many would probably guess.

“Ohio game in the NCAA tournament,” said Angell. “That’s really the only game I remember being nervous during the game, for that team and those guys I just didn’t want them to go out that way but fortunately they were able to win.”

Looking back on his path from UNC student, to voice of Tar Heel baseball, joining Woody Durham as an announcing partner in 2005, to succeeding him in 2011, Angell only hoped he would be where he is today.

“I was working towards being a division one play-by-play person at a college level,” said Angell, “and Carolina was, if I could have scripted it, is where it would have been.”

I liked Jones and listened to him almost every games. I grew up listening to Woody. I miss him, but Jones will be okay in time. I agree with flagship and simply savy. Just move on people. Maybe someday soon your team will be mentioned....

first public University in the Nation entitles you to certain rights and privileges....Well, obviously the "flagship" thought they had "priviledges" that ended up being VIOLATIONS!!! LOL! You get a little carried away don't you? Probation officer? Anger management? Therapist? Sorry I ruffled your little baby blue feathers little guy!

And yet you continue to acknowledge that we are indeed the Flagship University of the 16 campus University system. Being the first public University in the Nation entitles you to certain rights and privileges. Get used to it. We will always have this distintion since you nor anyone else can rewrite history.

As for Jefferson, we were never in the running for him so it's irrelevant that he chose Duke over State. It just makes Tobacco Road basketball better and better. And our pantry isn't exactly empty either.

By the way it's time for your meeting with your probation officer followed by your court ordered anger management class and then your therapist called as well. You have a busy day......

You need to be reminded that Everett Case, Norm Sloan and Jim Valvano wrote the book on how to cheat.

embittered ABC'ers (^^^^) will fly off the handle at the very slightest mention of anything remotely positive, or even neutral, that's written or spoken about The Flagship....Kind of like Tarholes do when anything is written about Duke or State, right? Duke gets Jefferson and you tar-trolls went crazy with baby blue, whining, negativity. And by the way, your self-named "flagship" is nothing but a cheating-azz jon boat!

I think Jones is going to be ok. I too miss Woody! Nobody could make a three yard loss sound like a touchdown better than Woody!

Angry, embittered ABC'ers (^^^^) will fly off the handle at the very slightest mention of anything remotely positive, or even neutral, that's written or spoken about The Flagship. I've lived around it all my life.

We've always found it best not to feed those trolls.

Everybody on here downing the story and asking who cares, I'm sure wouldn't be saying the same thing if it was the voice of the Wolfpack or Blue Devils featured. Just because it doesn't involve you or your interest's doesn't make it stupid. If you don't like it then don't read and definitely don't take the time to comment, simply move to the next article
