NCAA again tells UNC no academic rules broken

The NCAA told University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill officials last week that questionable practices in one of the university's academic departments didn't violate any NCAA rules, UNC officials said Friday.

A review by UNC found problems with 54 classes in the African and Afro-American Studies Department in a four-year period, with most of the issues linked to former department chair Julius Nyang’oro and a retired administrative assistant. Another review, led by former Gov. Jim Martin, is ongoing and looking into how far back the problems may have gone.

Independent studies within the Af-Am department received particular scrutiny after an investigation by WRAL News showed they were over-enrolled and under-supervised compared with similar courses in other departments.

The NCAA worked with UNC officials on their initial investigation in the summer of 2010 and found no violations of the organization's rules that would bring into question the eligibility of any student-athletes. UNC officials said that as new information came to light, including the possibility that athletes might have been steered to the questionable Af-Am classes by athletic counselors, they forwarded it to the NCAA.

NCAA staff on Aug. 23 reiterated that no rules appear to have been broken, UNC officials said. There has been speculation that new revelations might result in more NCAA sanctions against the Tar Heel football team.

NCAA spokeswoman Stacey Osburn declined to comment beyond confirming the statement that UNC issued on the matter.

"It's good news for the university. I mean, it really helps us so we don't have, like, a tarnished reputation," UNC freshman Chris Pollenz said.

"I'm obviously relieved, but at the end of the day, it's just something I just really don't try and think about too much," UNC senior William Heathcote said.

The NCAA gets involved in academic issues only when a staff member knowing arranges fraudulent academic credit or false transcripts for an athlete, regardless of whether the staff member acted alone or with the athlete, officials said. The organization also would get involved if an athlete knowingly arranged fraudulent academic credit or false transcripts, regardless of whether it affected eligibility.

New Af-Am department chairwoman Eunice Sahle told the UNC Board of Governors on Thursday that several practices, policies and procedures have been changed as a result of the investigation.

Among the modifications are new courses, a regulated process for students adding classes, stricter guidelines for independent study courses and syllabus reviews. The department will even get a new name, switching next year to the Department of African, African-American Diaspora Studies.

Chancellor Holden Thorp also outlined steps that UNC has taken at a university level to restore academic integrity and ensure transparency, including a new, public website – academicreview.unc.edu – that will track the continuing investigation.

Doctors make mistakes too.

The fact that you assign "college sports team" favoritism to your choice of physicians says only one thing, and says it loudly:

YOU are the one who needs to see a doctor.

(Even if that doctor did his undergrad at Faye State.)

RE: NCAA again tells UNC no academic rules broken

I only brought it up because I was asked "Why wasn't I in Atlanta supporting my team?" So I told him.

Yes, the prognosis for pancreatic cancer is one of the worst. Only 6% that are diagnosed live 5 years. Conversely, over 90% of breast & colon cancer victims survive at least 5 years.

I don't blame anyone for him getting cancer. And I never said no one CARED about him. I do blame them for not giving him a chance. And I DO BLAME doctors that can't diagnose it given the warning signs. Especially the a-hole specialist that condescendingly told him 5 months ago that its only pancreatitis, he would just have to learn to deal with pain management for the rest of his life. The good doctor even scoffed at his Christian faith. When asked by him & his wife if it was cancer, he flat out told them NO.

He eventually went to another specialist (Wake grad) who said we have to do something about this NOW. The surgeon at UNC was great. He did all that he could do. I don't blame him at all. But there is a special place in H3ll for that specialist. He will be getting sued. And not by me. By his wife, who just happens to be a UNC fan. No Red Rage there.

gee, I heard "if 10 people who rob a bank, the only person who gets in trouble is the person who gets caught. "

I'll leave the rest of the interpretation to you.

Yes. So intelligent. Nice analogy Dante.

This. From the same guy that sucker punched a State player after another loss and ran like a sissy. The same guy that danced on the sideline last year, while his team was getting shutout. Kerliner class right thar.

Gee, I'm sorry....does that upset you?

Poor little guy.

Hey, shouldn't you be in Atlanta supporting your team? Or is your obsession keeping you attached to the computer?

Poor thing

Glad you mentioned Atlanta. I had two tickets but had to pass up the trip. You see, my brother-in-law is on his last days in his 2 month battle with stage 4 pancreatic cancer. He's a UNC fan, btw.

He'd been sick since December. Been to his regular doctor (UNC grad) several times. PSA levels up, yet thinks it pancreatitis. She eventually refers him to a specialist (another UNC grad). He orders MRIs and other tests. MRIs show two masses in his pancreas. Doc says its pseudocysts. Eventually he decides to take out part of his pancreas. He goes to UNC hospital to have surgery. As soon as the surgeon gets in there, he sews him up. Cancer. Stage 4 pancreatic cancer. It's even spread to his stomach & his liver.

So if your UNC doctors were worth a ****, like you 'think' they are, he might have a chance. But because they aren't worth a ****, he doesn't.

My prayers for you and your brother. Your bitterness and anger towards UNC for a very tough situation is quite short sighted and spiteful. Not sure I'd wash the laundry here but since you did...

Pancreatic Cancer has a very low prognosis level and once found most folks don't make it a year. Remission is very rare. So I'm not sure what you were expecting from the doctors but you seem to be blaming a doctor for your brothers fate. There are quite a few factors that increase the risk of Pancreatic Cancer, none of them involve a medical professional. We are all one day closer to meeting our maker every day, we just don't have the crystal ball to figure that last day out. When your brother became sick in December, it was most likely already too late. It is unfortunate that you choose to think that doctors, who are people, who care about life, don't care about your brothers life because they went to UNC.

Oh, just lost a father in law to cancer a few weeks ago. He was treated by several Duke doctors who did all they could but they could not erase the excessive damage to his body from smoking. Thankfully he did not suffer through planned surgery that was only going to give him a few more weeks of life.

Sorry about your brother-in-law. But your bitterness doesn't erase the fact that the UNC Medical School is one of the best in the nation. And only 7 miles away is another outstanding medical school.

I hope his last days are peaceful and your anger is kept from him. We all have our family tragedies. Make the best of the time he has left. Prayers and peace to your family.
