North Carolina sophomore swimmer Allison Barnes was released from UNC Hospitals on Wednesday, UNC announced Friday.

Barnes was admitted to the hospital on Sept. 9.

"Allison's mother and I are happy to announce that Allison was released for North Carolina Memorial Hospital on Oct. 8, just over four weeks after being admitted," said her father, Keith Barnes, in a statement released by Carolina. "Allison's rehabilitation will take some time, but we're optimistic concerning her overall recovery.

“We would like to thank all those who have supported us over this ordeal, with special thanks going to the doctors and nurses at the hospital and the constant support of the UNC athletic department and UNC swim coach Rich DeSelm."

Barnes experienced an apparent severe hyperthermic episode at swim practice Sept. 9, university officials said. Her coaches called 911, and Barnes was taken to UNC Hospitals.

Barnes earned her first varsity letter competing in distance freestyle events during the past academic year. Her older sister, Amanda, graduated from UNC this year and played on the lacrosse team.

She is from Bel Air, Md., and graduated from C. Milton Wright High School.
