UNC's Davis: 'I have no interest' in Tennessee

North Carolina football coach Butch Davis said again on Wednesday that he is not pursuing the head coaching position at Tennessee.

“I have absolutely no interest in the University of Tennessee job,” Davis said on the ACC’s weekly conference call. “It’s a great job, but I have no interest in it. I love being here. My family loves being at Carolina. With the administration, we‘re doing everything we can every single day to build a championship program here.”

Asked if his agent, Jimmy Sexton of Memphis, Tenn., had been contacted by Tennessee, Davis said, “No.”

Tennessee has pushed out longtime coach Phillip Fulmer, and Davis’ name has been mentioned prominently in speculation about the Volunteers’ next coach. Southeast Conference schools like Tennessee draw enormous crowds for football and usually pay much more than other colleges.

But Sexton said in a speech recently in Birmingham, Ala., that he expected Davis to remain at UNC. Davis is in his second season in Chapel Hill, and the Tar Heels are now contending for a berth in the ACC championship game.

Of course, big-time football coaches sometimes deny interest in jobs they eventually take. Nick Saban, for example, consistently said he would remain with the Miami Dolphins until he took a lucrative deal to coach Alabama.

You said he hadn't "beat State" yet. The correct usage of the word is "beaten." I can't make that any clearer. If you think Roy is a potty mouth, perhaps it is YOU sir, (and I use that term loosely) that has been under a rock. You never mentioned the pro's thought the ACC was weak, in fact there is an article on WRAL today regarding the parity of ACC football this year.

You can't win with me, I will beat you every time. (Beat was used correctly in this instance...)

I'm sure he loves it in Chapped Hole. But as a guy with no previous ties to Carolina, and a dream job for a football coach opens up worth maybe $1 million more a year (or more), it would be hard to turn that down.

In the end, we all have to look out for #1. And be careful not to step in #2. :)

I doubt him leaving us after 2 years. Especially after what he has done this season. But anyways, keep up the great recruiting Butch! Go Heels!

Butch Davis is an SEC Alum. It would not surprise me if he went back to the SEC eventually. He realizes now however, that he would be walking into a buzzsaw if he left for UT. He has good low pressure job here at UNC. It's not that our expectations are low. It's just good to be winning games again. I envision the team getting back to an 11 win or even 12 win season and competing in a major BCS Bowl game. It is much easier to do that here than at UT. We will enjoy him as long as we have him.

GO HEELS!!

"Statistics do NOT lie. "

Actually, statistics are twisted and manipulated to support any assertion someone wants to make. Sometimes, they do lie (or mislead).

State's 2006 football recruiting class is down from 25 to I think 7. Some never enrolled, some transferred, some didn't make it in school. This was thanks to Chuck Amato. This is just one of his classes, and it hurts State's graduation situation. It has no bearing on TOB's players. If Amato were still here, he would have to answer for this. Tom does not, not until the same thing happens to him.

We have very new coaches in both basketball and football. The statistics don't necessarily apply to them yet. Once they've been here a few years, then look at their numbers. The coaches will own those numbers then.
