Williams frustrated by Ginyard's lack of progress
By Jason Jennings Jan 9, 2009
Chapel Hill, N.C. — Frustrated by Marcus Ginyard’s inability to get healthy, North Carolina coach Roy Williams said Friday that he is considering holding Ginyard out longer until he has recovered from preseason surgery on his left foot.
Ginyard, who has started 55 games in his career, had surgery Oct. 8 to correct a stress fracture and had a screw inserted in his left foot. He was expected to be out of action eight weeks, and Williams had hoped to have Ginyard back for the Michigan State game Dec. 3.
It is now 13 weeks since the surgery. Ginyard has played in three games for a total of 37 minutes.
"I'm very – you pick the adjective, I don't care – frustrated or concerned,” Williams said. “But I just thought, and Marcus thought, that he would be farther along.
"We are even discussing holding him out for a little bit and just letting him rehab and seeing if he can get back to that point where he was in the past. And if that's the case, we'll be a lot better off.”
Williams noted that Ginyard was the team’s defensive player of the year a season ago, and the Tar Heels have missed his toughness this season.
"You look at our club right now. Is there anybody that we can put out there that can make life miserable on the 6-3 to 6-6 guy on the other team? I don't know that we have that,” Williams said.
"There are some times when I'd like to have a healthy Marcus Ginyard out there, and we don't have him. That's the best way I can put it.”
Williams said Ginyard simply isn’t performing like he did the previous years.
“And that's what I'm standing on,” Williams said. “In practice, I don't see the offensive rebounds. I don't see the steals."
Ginyard played in UNC’s loss to Boston College on Sunday, but did not play Wednesday in the win over the College of Charleston.
"Marcus mentally knows where to go, but when he gets there, he doesn't have a lot left in the tank," he said.
Asked if Ginyard might redshirt, Williams said, "Right now, I'm trying to get Marcus ready to play for our team, period."

UNC versus Duke and State
UNC = 4 National Titles, Duke = 3 National Titles, State = 2 National Titles. That is facts. Any other statements are opinion. Seems to me that Duke and State have "choked" more than UNC!

I think this is part honest frustration on Roy's part and part motivational towards the other players on the team. He's challenging the remaining players on the team to step up and play defense because UNC will not win the National Title playing the defense they are right now.

UNC = Choke City you mean?
