ACC Commissioner John Swofford, who played football at North Carolina, heads a strong list of inductees into the North Carolina Sports Hall of Fame.
Joining Swofford in the Hall will be former N.C. State running back Willie Burden; Appalachian State football coach Jerry Moore; North Carolina women’s basketball coach Sylvia Hatchell; Dave Odom, the former head basketball coach at Wake Forest and South Carolina; and golf professional and course developer Roger Watson.
The class will be enshrined at the 46th-annual induction banquet on May 14 in the main ballroom of the North Raleigh Hilton.
Swofford rose to athletics director at UNC before leaving to become ACC commissioner. Burden was the 1973 ACC Football Player of the Year and led the Wolfpack to the ACC Championship that season, has been named to the North Carolina Sports Hall of Fame.
Burden, a native of Raleigh and one of N.C. State’s first African-American football recruits, joins five other inductees in the 2009 Hall of Fame class
Hatchell recently won her 800th game and has made the Tar Heels one of the top women’s programs in the nation.
