Tar Heels fill out football coaching staff

Allen Mogridge will be the third offseason addition to Butch Davis' coaching staff. Inside Carolina confirmed Monday through sources close to the situation that Mogridge is leaving his position at the University of Buffalo to join the UNC staff.

Mogridge, 32, played football at North Carolina from 1995-99 at a number of positions -- tight end, offensive tackle, fullback, defensive end and linebacker.

Following his playing career, he spent one year on the UNC strength and conditioning staff. And after a year of playing professional football (AFL), he joined the Buffalo coaching staff -- where he's remained for seven of the last eight seasons.

The Severville, Tenn. native has most recently worked with the offensive line and running backs, and has held the duty of recruiting coordinator.

The Tar Heel program had three assistant coach positions to fill this offseason after the departures of special teams coach and defensive assistant John Lovett (Miami), linebackers coach Tommy Thigpen (Auburn) and tight ends coach Steve Hagen (NFL - Cleveland).

UNC made decisions last week to hire Troy Douglas from South Florida and Art Kaufman from Southern Miss. Those hirings have not yet been announced by the University.

Im sensing some jealousy in this post! LOL! Go Tar Heels!!!

RE: Tar Heels fill out football coaching staff

DarkNightAhead, I can't really disagree with much of what you wrote. I was just explaining why I post so much on Carolina blogs, and how it isn't because of jealousy. I believe you get that, though.

One thing I take issue with is how we "ran Herb out of town". Herb got a GREAT offer and got out while the gettin' was good. He was a good coach, but not a great coach. He was on the perpetual hotseat, so I can see why people might say we ran him out of town. But he got a sweet offer that we weren't about to match, and I think he knew that. He was able to start over at ASU, and he's doing well. And I wish him well. He just wasn't getting it done here. He isn't running that stupid Princeton offense out there. He was locked into that system here because his players were recruited for it. That system will beat a lot of poor-to-average teams (hence he got enough wins to get into the dance a few years). But that system is rarely going to beat the best teams. Herb took NC State as far as he was going to take us. One Sweet 16 appearance in 11 years is about all we could expect with his system. It was time for a change, and it was the best thing for both sides. He has a great recruiter out there, too, from what I understand.

One last comment about Butch... he recruited a LOT more players than he had room for. Something HAS to give. Players either have to be dropped from the current roster, or recruits have to be dropped. He CAN'T keep his current team AND add the new recruits to it. That would be an NCAA recruiting violation. He just kicked three players off the team. More has to follow as I don't think he has room for all the incoming freshmen yet. With the clearinghouse that is going on, it's hard for me to accept that these players just HAPPEN to violate academic or team rules. Something stinks in Chapel Hill, and it's not the usual stink of all the Tar Heels!

I could care less what an opposing teams fans think of me. I despise State and Dook athletics. I do not hate the fans who support the school. If we all thought and acted the same way, then there would be no rivalry and this site would be very boring. No one is going to change because someone thinks they are not conforming to some unwritten standard of "Fanhood". This is supposed to be about sports and not the people who support the teams you hate. Stick to that, and you will save yourself a great deal of unecessary headache.

You haven't hung around many dookies have you? Sorry dude but arrogant intolerable fans exist in every setting. The fact is that when you have schools so close together your going to see the worst of it. I probably know more walmart dook fans than walmart state or Carolina fans. But perhaps that is b/c the core of my friends actually went to the University. Its just the nature of the business that we call the NCAA. Carolina students make fun of State students just as State students make fun of Carolina students in rather harsh and insensitive ways. I know this easily b/c I grew up in Raleigh and decided to go to UNC. I've witnessed the worst on all ends and continue to see it. Enjoy your wolfpack and I'll enjoy my Heels. It would be nice to see the pack boost it up a notch on the bball end but i'm convinced UNC and State are building good football programs while the rest of the ACC is going downhill with this expansion. The things you say above about belittling the fans is exactly how I feel about elitest dook university. I have no ill will toward state as a university but like you find UNC fans extreme I find state fans all the more extreme. A good example is how Herb was run out of town or how Roy is treated b/c he lost a whopping... Get this... 3 games so far this year. In the end it is what it is but you might live longer if you come down to reality and realize that when it comes to rivalries or sports in general there are good and bad apples of all sorts. Generalizing an entire community is rather lopsided but its your right.

The Carolina fans bring this on themselves. Duke has had more success over the last 20 years than Carolina and I don't bother with them, because their fans are not arrogant and intolerable like the Carolina fans are. (Some are bad, but it's on a much smaller scale...) I enjoyed the humbling years of Matt Doherty because it brought the fans down to Earth for a few years. I actually felt a little sorry for them then. But then they got a taste of success again, and the arrogance is a flyin'.

Nobody likes people that think they are better (superior) to everyone else. That's the typical Carolina fan. Not all of them, but the average fan. And usually, the worst fans are the ones that will never set foot in Chapel Hill, or ANY college campus for that matter. I guess they need to pull for a winner, so they pull for Carolina. The sad thing is, most Carolina students would belittle them to no end and they don't even know it. Carolina students even make fun of fellow college students (at State) because there's a vet school and an agriculture curriculum there. You don't think they would make fun of someone at a community college or that lives in a trailer?

I'm not jealous of these people. I don't want to be like these people. I want these people brought back down to Earth. If you want to mistake that for jealousy, be my guest. I'm quite happy with my Wolfpack, although I'd like our basketball team to move along a little quicker.
