North Carolina coach Roy Williams made it sound like point guard Ty Lawson is unlikely to play Thursday in the Tar Heels’ opening-round game in the NCAA Tournament.

Carolina plays Radford Thursday afternoon.

“There was a time this week I thought he could play tomorrow,” William said Wednesday at a news conference in Greensboro. “There’s a time, including right now, where I’ve said no.”

Williams has said he wanted Lawson to practice at least part of Tuesday and all of Wednesday.

“Yesterday, all he did was shoot the ball and go through some dummy offense things,” Williams said. “And that’s all he did today.”

Lawson jammed his toe severely on the Friday before the Duke game, but played that Sunday in Chapel Hill in UNC’s win. He did not play last weekend in the ACC Tournament.

Lawson has said he took a shot to numb the toe before the Duke game. Williams said Wednesday he has told Lawson not to take another shot to numb the toe before playing.

RE: Lawson unlikely to play Thursday

Won't matter. UNC will beat Radford handily. However, it would be nice to have him Saturday. Go Heels!

Wrong

We're in the world of "one and done" and NO team will be over-looked. Roy said that "some day" a 16-seed will beat a 1-seed, but he doesn't want that to happen THIS year, to HIS team. I bet Radford plays a competitive game.

No 16 seed will ever beat a 1 seed. If a 1 seed ever loses, it is because the team came down with a collective brain aneurism or stomach flu. The top four teams in the tournament are there for a reason. The bottom four teams are also at the bottom for a reason. The top is so much better than the bottom, that they won't be beaten in a straight-up game.

RE: Lawson unlikely to play Thursday

This is probably the wrong place to write this and I hope Lawson has a speedy recovery, but as a Radford Grad I thought I would like to make a couple of points. Radford is coming to the tournament for the second time in the history of the school. It is a small school where recruiting is pretty much unheard of and most of the teams are made up of players who saw a poster during Fall Registration saying “Basketball Tryouts on Thursday”. Most of the seniors on this team will never don a uniform after this tournament and their prize for winning the Big South Championship is to play Carolina. A prize indeed, the opportunity to pit their skills again one of the best teams in the country and see how they stack up. So I challenge all Carolina fans to look in the eyes of this underdog team, because to run with your boys they will have to dig deep down inside to depths they have never achieved before. If they do achieve this feat, you will be rewarded with an inspiring event to watch and isn’t this what the game is all about. Remember, win or lose America loves an underdog and these boys should be fun to watch, but make no mistake Carolina they are coming to win. So applaud their effort for they are already winners, and this game is their prize.

GO HIGHLANDERS!!!!!!

Great attitude! That's what it's supposed to be about. In a way, I wish ALL colleges operated this way. I thought so long before State became the ACC cellar dwellers that they are. I wish colleges would halt all recruiting and just let the REAL college students enrolled try out for the team. The semi-pros that we see on the best college teams probably belong in a farm league, like minor league baseball. I'll use Carolina as an example: When you have a group of guys that were recruited from all over the country to play for a team, how can they really pretend to represent "Carolina"? They're a farm team for the NBA, even if most of the players will just graduate and never don an NBA uniform. It is only truly representative of the university if true students "try out" for the team. (I'm not picking on Carolina, just using them as an example. I heard in this year's State-Carolina games, NONE of the starters -- for EITHER team -- were from the state of North Carolina. There's just something fundamentally wrong with that...)

I know nothing will ever change. There's too much money involved. But part of me wishes it would.

And I would love nothing more than for Radford to SHOCK THE WORLD and take home an even bigger prize than their conference championship -- the North Carolina Tar Heels!!!

ritmire, we are not overlooking them. we know they have talent because of the 2 pt. game with va. and the close game for one half with Wake. So don't think they are being disrespected by the Heels. Every game is important. You can bet the focus is on Radford, not someone else. They also have beaten some good teams, so know that we respect your team. In the tournment everyone needs to be feared. I'm looking forward to seeing the game.
