North Carolina freshman Donte Moss is scheduled to appear in Orange County court on Aug. 20 on a misdemeanor charge of simple assault, according to court records.

The Orange County clerk's office said that the incident occurred on campus on July 16 and the victim listed is Jefferson Hunter Furr, who is also an incoming freshman football player.

“We became aware of the incident immediately on the night of the altercation,” head coach Butch Davis said Tuesday morning. “Donte and Hunter both regret the incident and have been disciplined internally.”

According to sources close to the situation, the charges are expected to be dropped.
Moss is an All-American defensive end from Jacksonville Northside. Furr is a running back from Winston-Salem Mount Tabor.

Moss and Furr were both enrolled in the second semester of UNC's summer session, which began on June 18 and concluded on July 24.

Moss and Furr were unavailable for comment.

Davis said Moss will not miss any games.
