North Carolina

UNC's Quinn says Heels have put Georgia Tech game behind them

It was not the start North Carolina had hoped for to their conference schedule.

The Tar Heels won the first three games of the season for the first time since the Mack Brown era in Chapel Hill, and were hoping to keep that momentum going last Saturday in Atlanta.  Georgia Tech, however, had other plans as the Jackets dominated time of possession, and the game as whole, handing UNC a 24-7 defeat.  It marks the ninth consecutive year that North Carolina has lost its conference opener.  While many teams would let a loss like that linger, UNC standout defensive end Robert Quinn tells 99.9-FM, The Fan that the Heels have already put that game behind them.

"That game is over.  We've put it behind us," Quinn said.  "We've got an 'L' on our record now.  We want to get back on the field and back on the winning side."

Quinn has certainly been a major reason for the Tar heel's success on the defensive side of the ball.  The sophomore has recoded 20 total tackles and three quarterback sacks in the first four games of the season, and forced a game-winning safety against UConn in the second game of the year.

Carolina had been mentioned as a possible contender for the ACC Championship this season, and Quinn says that Saturday's loss in Atlanta hasn't  changed that goal for the team.

"I don't think that we are out of ACC contention yet.  We've got plenty of ACC games left. Hopefully, we can get going again against Virginia."

A few things (just some food for thought):

1) UVa lost to William & Mary, who happens to be 4-0 right now and I believe made a lengthy run in the FCS playoffs last year.

2) UVa only lost by 16 to the #10 team in the country.

3) UVa only lost by three (in a fairly high scoring game) on the road at Southern Miss, who has only lost one game -- on the road at a ranked Kansas team, and only by 7 points.

4) UVa is coming off their bye week. Allegedly, they are re-tooling their offense to be more of a spread offense. Granted, UVa is no Georgia Tech, but that is the same type of offense that gave Carolina fits last weekend. And they now have game film for plays that GT ran successfully against Carolina's defense. (Can you say "blueprint"?)

5) Historically, UVa is one of those teams (like GT) that seems to have Carolina's number in football. And they stole that game from the Heels last year. What better way to end a three game skid than to beat a team like Carolina on the road?

6) Carolina's confidence may be rocked right now, knowing how they got beat in the last game.

Virginia might be awful, or they might be a little better than awful. Keep in mind that Carolina hasn't exactly shown themselves to be a powerhouse, either. Unless you think that 3-1 record actually means something considering the teams they've played.

I'm just sayin'........ it could happen. Having said all this, I think Carolina wins by about 17. But don't think the upset CAN'T happen! For kicks, I'm still calling for it.

You are right. Anything can happen. WF could pull an upset special too. We will just have to wait and see.

GO HEELS!!

They very well might. Wake beating State in W-S would be MUCH less of a miracle than UVa beating UNC in Chapel Hill.

We better cut out the unforced penalties, or Wake WILL beat us.
