North Carolina

Key UNC blockers listed as probable for Va. Tech

Posted October 27, 2009

Guard Jonathan Cooper, center Lowell Dyer, tackle Kyle Jolly and tight end Zack Pianalto are all listed as probable for North Carolina’s game at Virginia Tech Thursday night.

Carolina’s line has been thinned by injuries all season, and the Tar Heels face a rugged defense in Blacksburg.

Having Cooper (ankle), Dyer (shoulder), Jolly (ankle) and Pianalto (concussion) available would be a huge boost for UNC.

Also listed as probable are defensive end E.J. Wilson (thigh), linebacker Linwan Euwall (ankle) and running back Devon Ramsay (knee).

Listed as questionable are receiver Joshua Adams (shoulder) and center Cam Holland (shoulder).

Listed as doubtful are defensive back Jordan Hemby (concussion) and tight end Ryan Taylor (knee).

Out for the game are: quarterback A.J. Blue (knee), tackle Carl Gaskins (knee), safety Matt Merletti (knee), snapper Trevor Stuart (knee) and tailback Jamal Womble (wrist).

Maybe you should also take note of what Carolina did to the acc's BEST offense for an entire half last Thursday, as well.

I'm a State fan, and staunch ABC'er. But I believe Carolina's coaches did call off the dogs on defense a little bit. I'm stopping short of calling it "prevent defense", because they didn't go THAT far. But I think they were more conservative, hoping not to get burned. And that is exactly what happened.

Fine. See if I predict any more wins for Carolina! ;)

gobble gobble remember that was the acc's worst defense last thursday

Oh no, TBK is casting his vote for us, run for cover:p. all joking aside, i think it would be a great boost for the team and the fans if we did somehow pull off this win. if the OL that is back from injuries is at least somewhat fresh, and our D doesnt collapse like they seemingly did in the FSU game, i predict it to be a lot closer than all the analysts and haters think.

I wouldn't put much stock into what TBK predicts, he's wrong A LOT :)

I think it can happen because Carolina's defense can either score, or force a turnover that leaves their offense in a position to get a quick score. I don't think Carolina's offense will score 24 points on normal drives, though. The defense will have to make something happen. But they can do that.

I feel the same way. Despite the loss, I hope the Heels did gain some confidence from the way they played in the first half. Had the defensive coaches not given the game away, the Heels could have had it. They can play with VT. They just have to believe they can. UNC-24 VT-17. Sounds crazy, but stranger things have happened.

On paper, Carolina shouldn't win this game, but... and I don't know why, but I have a funny feeling they will. And I'm not trying to use reverse psychology to "make" the opposite happen. Carolina is getting ZERO respect and ZERO chance to win this game. When teams get disrespected like that, sometimes they show up with extra motivation and shock the world.

Carolina played right AWESOME in the first half against FSU, and FSU has the top offense in the league. They surely gained confidence from that, despite losing that game.

And I just think VT is NOT all that great. They're solid most of the time, but they're just not as great as people seem to think. They're beatable on any given day. They'll probably roll into this game expecting to sleepwalk their way to a win. But if Carolina's defense puts the clamp down on VT's offense, anything can happen. They might just find themselves in a dogfight they didn't see coming.

If Beamer is smart, he'll make VT aware that FSU didn't expect the beatdown they got in the first half of the Carolina game, either. The question is, can Carolina pull off that magic again, and for more than one half? Or did they leave it all on the field last week?

Where did that come from? I think he was commenting on the near total silence from Carolina fans, not getting joy from injuries.

State has TEN players out for the season with injury, and two others left the team before the season even started. We're in touch with your emotion on this one.
