Highly touted tight end chooses UNC

Alex Smith announced his verbal commitment to North Carolina during a press conference held at his high school Tuesday. The four-star prospect is ranked among the nation's Top 10 tight ends by Scout.com.

"After being through this long, delayed-out recruiting process I think the best fit for me -- and me and my mom agree -- is the University of North Carolina," Smith said.

Smith, a 6-foot-5, 235-pound tight end from West Chester (Ohio) Lakota West, selected UNC from a list of two dozen scholarship offers that included Cincinnati, Kentucky, Miami, Michigan, South Carolina, and Wisconsin.

Originally, Smith verbally committed to Cincinnati in February. In early June, though, he softened that pledge.

Shortly after softening his Cincinnati commitment, Smith and his mother made an unofficial visit to UNC.

Smith officially visited Wisconsin in early September and then UNC a month later. Throughout the process, he also took unofficial trips to Cincinnati, Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Michigan State, NC State, and Ohio State.

A couple of weeks ago, with his senior football season concluded, Smith unofficially visited UNC.

Upon his return from his most recent visit, Smith and Cincinnati parted ways, and Smith announced he was ready to make a verbal commitment.

"...I really really think it's the right fit for me and it really clicked on the last visit," Smith explained.

Smith’s senior football season ended prematurely with a first-round playoff loss. On the year, he made 23 catches for 411 yards and four touchdowns.

And his point was that you called it a wuppin when it wasn't.

I don't care. A loss is a wuppin. I didn't say it was a slaughter. You're getting nitpicky, all the while missing my point. Someone said the D-1 teams in this state were afraid to play App. But State played them. And beat them. With one of the worst State teams in recent memory.

In other words, no one is afraid to play App. What do we (any of us) have to gain by playing and beating a team we're supposed to beat?

Did State play App State this year?

Come on now, be serious. This team is much better than that team.

much better? idk... after unc hands them their 8th loss this weekend they will have only one more win this year than that year. oh yeah, this year state has one acc victory. that season state had two acc wins (they beat fsu and bc) along with app st. this year the best win is the pitt win.

looks like this team is as bad, or worse!

Yes, but the point was that not ALL D-1 teams in this state are afraid to play them.

Yes, there is a way. Our offense could show up and click on all cylinders. Carolina's defense didn't even slow us down last year. It might be one of those matchup things where our offense matches up well with your defense. If that happens, State could blow out Carolina.

I didn't say it was likely. But it could happen. Every possible scenario is wide open here. Nobody knows what will happen.

states offense at its best comes nowhere close to uncs defense! you're living in the past, what happened last year, is in the past. if state wins it will be by less than 7pts. uNCstate will not put up more than 21pt son the heels so stop lying to yourself

Wrong. State is averaging over 30 points/game (25 points/game if you throw out our FBS games where we scored 110 total points). And that includes a 3 point game against SC, and a 10 point game at VT last week.

In other words, State can score some points. Our defense is the problem. Twice this year, we've traded TD's on consecutive drives with teams until the score was 21-21 before the first punt by either team (Duke and FSU). If we had half a defense, our offense would have given us sizeable leads in those games.

Don't think State can't score against Carolina's defense. The only way we don't score is if we turn the ball over.

Look, I'm still saying we're MOST LIKELY going to lose. Read my other posts. I really believe that. I'm not just saying it. But this is why they play the game. No one knows what will happen once they snap the chinstraps and mix it up. State has a dangerous offense, even if it's not as good as Carolina's awesome defense. We have receivers that can outrun anybody on the field. State has scored on a 70+ yard pass play more than once this season on our first play from scrimmage. You're kidding yourself if you think State's offense isn't dangerous. Last I checked, we were in the top-3 on offense in the ACC.

oh... you mean the same va tech team unc scored 20 on? lets see... unc has a +18 turnover margin over state, this season. unc defense avgerages 1+ interception per game. unc defense forces 1+ fumble per game and averages 2+ sacks per game. oh yeah... state is near the bottom of the league in sacks given up at 30 and unc is at the top with 28sacks! uncs defense is the fastest in the nation, they will chase down anything state may throw at them. last but not least, state is the #50 ranked offense in the country behind a few teams unc already beat and unc has the #5 ranked defense in the country.

several reasons why unc will win by 14!

All I can say is that is why they play the game. I've already posted several times that I don't think there's any way we can win this game. On paper, we shouldn't. We'll just have to see what happens. Glad to know you're so confident. Enjoy the game!

I guess you forget the wuppin that a bad NC State team laid on App about three years ago.
