Chapel Hill, N.C. — North Carolina coach Roy Williams said at a news conference Friday that he regrets what happened with a Presbyterian fan Saturday night, but that he was only trying to get security to check out whether the fan had the right ticket.
"It's a non-issue to me," Williams said. "I'm sorry it happened. I wish it hadn't happened, and that's enough."
Williams said some fans sitting near the UNC parents section had heckled his players at a game in New York, and that was fresh on his mind.
"We have to live with that on the road," he said. "But I don't just believe we have to put up with that at home."
Williams also said he thought the fan was an unruly Carolina fan, and didn't realize until later that Brian King was pulling for Presbyterian.
He said he didn't ask to have to have the fan ejected, but said he couldn't remember exactly what he said to Smith Center officials.
"I said, 'Go see what that guy's problems are' or 'Go get that guy and see what his problems are,'" Williams said. "I don't remember what I said. I turned around and started coaching."
Williams has not spoken to reporters since Saturday night, when Carolina beat Presbyterian at the Smith Center. He did address the issue on his radio show this week.
His Tar Heels play Saturday in Arlington, Texas, against the University of Texas.
Carolina officials said after the game that Brian King of Concord was intoxicated at the game and didn't have a ticket for the season. King responded on Monday that he was not intoxicated and was sitting with friends in the section behind the UNC bench who invited him to be there.
The incident was captured by WRAL photographer Brad Simmons and the video was soon on Yahoo! and Deadspin and other popular sites.
Also Friday, Williams said Marcus Ginyard will play against the Longhorns.
