UNC football players meet fans amid scandal
By Beau Minnick Aug 28, 2010
Chapel Hill, N.C. — The University of North Carolina football team hosted "Meet The Heels" Saturday. The fan-focused gathering was held amid an ongoing NCAA investigation into improper conduct by players.
School officials said Thursday that the university had self-reported academic infractions involving football players and a tutor uncovered during an internal investigation.
The academic infractions came up during a separate NCAA probe into whether some Carolina players had improper contact with professional sports agents, school officials said.
The newest investigation has some fans concerned about the upcoming football season.
“I’m just worried about how the team's going to play this year,” 12-year-old Colin Hall said while getting his Carolina football trading cards autographed Saturday at Kenan Stadium.
The probes into improper conduct by players could put the team down by as many as a dozen players.
“I'm disappointed,” UNC fan Robert Brown said Saturday. “We don't normally have this problem at Carolina.”
"It makes me sad that the Tar Heels would be involved, that the name would even be involved," UNC fan Tanya Burrow said.
The newest investigation comes as the 18th-ranked Tar Heels get ready for a Sept. 4 opener against No. 21 LSU in Atlanta.
Which players Carolina will start in that game remains a question mark.
Athletic director Dick Baddour has said that he did not expect that the situation would be resolved before the season starts. He cautioned fans against making assumptions of culpability about players based upon their playing time.

You can take the coach out of Miami, but you can't take the Miami out of the coach.

RE: UNC football players meet fans amid scandal
"In all of the investigations and reports, State was found guilty of these things:
- players sold shoes provided by Nike for spending cash
- an NCSU player had mono at Christmas and couldn't fly home to Miami. The dorms closed over Christmas. He spent the night at a booster's house"
WRONG. YOu need to read the UNC System/"Spangler report" which detailed among the following:
1. Admitting athletes who did not meet the minimum qualifications (i.e. Washburn's 480 SAT).
2. Pressuring professors to changing grades from Fs to Incompletes to keep players eligible.
3. Arranging special "classes" between the fall and spring semesters. These classes included ONLY the professor, player, and member of the coaching staff. The grades received during those classes helped keep players eligible.
4. Pressuring tutors to complete academic work for players.
While the NCAA probation was only for the "selling complementary tickets and shoes" by the players, the actual investigation revealed academic fraud that the NCAA allowed the UNC System and NCSU to punish.

That's more of what I remember going down back then. It was more than just selling shoes and tickets. I remember there being adacemic infractions as well.

You remember the accusations, but not of what NCSU was convicted. Isn't it amazing that this cheating tarheel post has now turned on NCSU from 30 years ago?

Well, you should have known that would happen when some State fans were criticizing UNC's academic and NCAA issues. Kinda like the pot calling the kettle black.
