Davis says players unable to play 'won't travel'

North Carolina head football coach Butch Davis met with the media Thursday afternoon for the final time before the Heels leave for Atlanta Friday morning.

"If there is any indication that anybody is not going to be allowed to play in the game then they won't travel," Davis said.

Davis could not give a number as to how many players might be suspended due to the ongoing NCAA and academic investigations into the UNC football program.

ESPN's Joe Schad reported Wednesday that 16 players will be suspended for the game and that UNC is exploring "rolling suspensions".

Davis said that any report as to the number of players in questions is pure speculation, and that the staff has "made contingency plans" depending on who is available at game time.

UNC's director of football communications Kevin Best said the number of players involved, and those who's eligibility is in question, fluctuates constantly.

"Dialogue between the school and NCAA is open and has remained open," Best said.

Davis said the school likely will not release a depth chart until Saturday as, "it is conceivable we will not know who can play until Saturday afternoon."

"With all the rumors and speculation, the kids have done a good job," Davis said. "New guys are going to get their opportunity."

Davis also said that even though DT Marvin Austin has been suspended indefinitely there is a possibility that he could play again this season.

RE: Davis says players unable to play 'won't travel'

If UNC really cared so much about their integrity, why don't they just hold a meeting with the football team, list all the possible infractions that the NCAA is investigating, and then make an announcement to all the players that those that believe they might have violated these rules need to come forward to the university compliance office?

Why is it that it's the NCAA's fault for the UNC program being in limbo? Couldn't the program resolve this themselves? I'm pretty sure they could if they wanted to. But they don't want to. Because they're just like everybody else and hoping the NCAA investigation misses something or can't find enough "proof" of wrong doing.

We all know big time college football is filled with seedy underhanded behavior. We wish it wasn't, but it is. At least most schools don't go around pretending it isn't and preaching about how pristine their programs are and how they are above such unscrupulous behavior.

If the UNC program actually had true character and integrity we would have seen it by now. They would have stepped up to the plate and uncovered all the wrongful actions for the NCAA and accepted whatever punishment that came their way. But they didn't do that, because just like every other dirty cheat in the world, they know they've done far more wrong than for what they've been caught. And that'd be somewhat acceptable, because every cheat does that, but then not every cheat goes around trying to convince the rest of the world of their honor. The world hates hypocrites UNC. Either join the club and accept the realities of the game, or stop playing. You can't have it both ways.

Ha, this comes from a State guy. Yes, the same school that STILL won't admit 20 years after the fact that Jimmy V was the biggest con artist and crook ever to coach in the ACC. Oh, he was an angel and everybody else was out to get him. It wasn't his fault.........yada yada yada.

Biggest con artist and crook to ever coach in the ACC? Hardly. That title belongs to Frank McGuire.

I don't recall State fans claiming Jimmy V was an angel. We just didn't like the fact that the NCAA investigations and sanctions that came upon our basketball program had less to do with our malfeasance and more to do with a bunch of hypocritical jackmules from Chapel Hill raising a fuss because the Heels' domination at the top of the conference was being challenged by their two triangle neighbors.

If it had been Jimmy V's conduct alone, or the that of his players, that brought about such investigation, fine, so be it. But the fact of the matter is that people had it out for Jimmy V because they couldn't handle the fact NCSU beat out UNC for the regular season title in 1989.

The people that went after Jimmy V did so because they got wind through rumor and other unsubstianted sources of possible violations at NCSU. If they had gone after UNC's program with the same zealousness they would have uncovered similar infractions. They didn't go after UNC of course, because they were all Tarholes. And Tarholes know UNC is incapable of any sort of misconduct. And even suggesting such impropriety takes place in Chapel Hill does nothing but spur out of Tarholes similar responses to when Darth Vader tells young Luke that he's his father: "That's NOT TRUE. That's IMPOSSIBLE!"

State fans will gladly admit our program's standards aren't perfect. But then we don't go around ratting on our neighbors simply because we don't like the fact they started challenging us on the court.

Still in denial. V is still a con artist. Pitiful. You guys were booing the guy in his last year. His unfortunate death erased the memories of YEARS of academic fraud, bad teams, and players even he wouldn't bring in front of a mike.

Con artist?

Why? Because his dirt poor players sold tickets and sneakers for a little extra cash? Or because he got caught?

UNC hasn't found ways to get their kids a little illegal spending money? you're deluding yourself. And you know dang well UNC has had more than their fair share of players that couldn't string together more than two coherent sentences.

I've never excused Jimmy V's wrong doings, but I at least understand where he was coming from. He was just trying to help his kids. And he felt the best way to help his players was to do some things that us outsiders deem unscrupulous. I'd rather him cover up Washburn's drug addiction in an effort to get him some private help than turn his back on him and take the only thing he had in life. But I guess that wouldn't fit with "The Carolina Way," which means willingly recruiting/admitting athletes that obviously don't have what it takes to succeed on their own merits in the classroom, and then turning their backs on them with indignitation when they are found doing the obvious things it takes to keep them eligible to perform on the field.

State fans are at least willing to admit certain compromises have to be made when they make them. You tarholes bend the rules and make the exceptions and then cry shame on you in delusional ignorance when you get busted doing what everbody else does.

Every program cheats. The teams that get caught are usually the ones that believe so thoroughly in their own sanctimonious bullschit that it's OK when they do it, because they cheat the "right way," which I guess is to say, "The Carolina Way."

Face it Tarholes-your athletic programs have had no real credibility since Dean's final few seasons, when he went from recruiting guys like George Lynch/Rick Fox to guys like Rasheed/Stackhouse. Why the change? He needed to win. And everybody does what it takes to win. Nobody's immune. NOBODY. It's about time you grow up and admit that.

RE: Davis says players unable to play 'won't travel'

1) unc fans know the art of deflection better than Herb Sendek! Yes - State got caught, but it was publicly announced that many of the allegations were false. So gt over it

2) unc knows who isn't playing - they're keeping it from the media to try and maintain as much competitive advantage over LSU that they can. Smart move IMO.

3) Austin is as guilty as the unabomber! Cupcake shouldn't be allowed back on the field! Those that had papers written for them - they should be suspended or expelled, just like any other student.

4) My question to unc fans....are you actually trying to justify what these guys did by saying: "how many of you haven't cheated..." Really? Come on!

5) I never wathc unc games, unless it's a State game, but I just might have to set the DVR for the game tomorrow night, since I'll be at Carter finley watching our 1 gauaranteed win this year (haha). I'm interested to see what unc is able to put on the field.

6) Finally - somethign we can all agree upon - Happy Opening Weekend to College Football!!!

Be safe, cheer loud, and make sure there's gas in your tank for tailgatin'!

Yes, because we all know Carolina fans would agree if the shoe were on the other foot, and all us State fans could say is, "well, EVERYBODY DOES IT!!!"

I'm sure Carolina fans would agree with us if we were the ones saying that.

LOL

Could have sworn it was the book Personal Fouls that brought down State, not any silly nonsense you claim from UNC.

The book of lies, you mean?

RE: Davis says players unable to play 'won't travel'

You would think that with all of this time the NCAA would have gathered enough information to give to the AD. Does the Board of Trustees tell the AD when certain things are released? Who/whom is running this show in the works? Don't you think by now that Butch knows who is on the list? If Austin is allowed to come back to this team; then some things are really going to smell at UNC.

How can you make that statement about Austin when you have zero details?

Whoever said that about Valvano? We KNOW he lost control of his program. And we paid the price. That cold case is LONG closed, friend.
