Chapel Hill, N.C. — ESPN.com senior writer Pat Forde is reporting that North Carolina backup point guard Larry Drew II has left the Tar Heel program and will transfer to another school.
Drew reportedly left the university on Thursday, coming off one of his best efforts of the season (9 assists in 19 minutes) Tuesday night in North Carolina's 106-74 victory over Boston College. The source also said UNC's coaching staff was made aware of the decision.
Drew began the year as the Heels' starting point guard, but recently relinquished that role to freshman Kendall Marshall. Since the switch, Drew's playing time has decreased from around 28 minutes to 22 minutes per game. However, during the same stretch, Drew has had two of his most productive games of the season, totaling 19 assists and only 2 turnovers in his last two contests.
If Drew transfers to another Division I school he will have to sit out one season and will have one year of eligibility remaining.
North Carolina head coach Roy Williams will address the media at his regularly scheduled press conference Friday at 2:00 p.m. You can hear the press conference live on 99.9 FM The Fan ESPN Radio or listen to it at your computer by visiting WRALSportsFan.com
I've been on TDD recently and there have been worries voiced. Now it is a big unknown.- Posted by rfred16The ABC'ers, especially Dookies, are watering at the mouth because they know it will take 3-4 games for them to adjust properly. Drew has only one good attribute, defense. His attitude and poor play is what caused some of the early season troubles for the Heels, and the GT performance was indicative of tension in the locker room. Move Strickland from shooting guard to part time PG, start Bullock at shooting guard and tweak the rest of the lineup. With the cancer gone and a few adjustments they can only get better.- Posted by Krzyzewskiectomy
Uhhhh...if you are referring to our next game with you, we were already watering at the mouth...UNC doesn't strike fear in anyone's hearts yet....They may be back one day, but that day has not yet arrived..
- Posted by KrzyzewskiectomyLooks at it this way, Bullock will be getting way more than 16 minutes a game now.jgunn, It probably means that Roy was going to sack him even more in terms of time on the court this year. We saw first hand who the starters are going to be now from the game the other night. Let's just hope that game was a good starting point for what's to come.- Posted by Navigate life
- Posted by KrzyzewskiectomyThis is shocking AND disappointing. The rotation was really working with KM getting the start at the point and LD2 coming off the bench. IMHO it's totaly selfish on Drew's part. He could have at least finished the season. I guess those of us who thought there were chemistry problems on the team were right. Hopefully with LD2 leaving - without the door hitting him in the rear - will make the team better. I think the players preferred KM anyway. Barnes spoke glowingly of him not too long ago.- Posted by jgunn
I've been saying it for a season and a half now. Remember Drew II's reaction when KM basically won the Virginia Tech game? Henson was cheering, Drew II was sulking on the bench. Drew brought no enthusiasm whatsoever while KM looks like he is having a good time and the chemistry is much better with him. Unfortunately as good as this will be in the long run, the Heels might struggle for the next 3 games while the lineups get switched around. They are now in much worse shape the next three games than they would have been and are in serious jeopardy to lose all three.
