Report: Larry Drew to transfer from UNC

Posted February 4, 2011

— senior writer Pat Forde is reporting that North Carolina backup point guard Larry Drew II has left the Tar Heel program and will transfer to another school.

Drew reportedly left the university on Thursday, coming off one of his best efforts of the season (9 assists in 19 minutes) Tuesday night in North Carolina's 106-74 victory over Boston College.  The source also said UNC's coaching staff was made aware of the decision.

Drew began the year as the Heels' starting point guard, but recently relinquished that role to freshman Kendall Marshall. Since the switch, Drew's playing time has decreased from around 28 minutes to 22 minutes per game.  However, during the same stretch, Drew has had two of his most productive games of the season, totaling 19 assists and only 2 turnovers in his last two contests.

If Drew transfers to another Division I school he will have to sit out  one season and will have one year of eligibility remaining.

North Carolina head coach Roy Williams will address the media at his regularly scheduled press conference Friday at 2:00 p.m.  You can hear the press conference live on 99.9 FM The Fan ESPN Radio or listen to it at your computer by visiting

I've been on TDD recently and there have been worries voiced. Now it is a big unknown.

There is a master plan at work here.

Mr. Drew I will soon me named as the new head basketball coach of NC State.

Mrs. Drew I will receive a very large salary (from the same person who knew Mary Easley) to sing the national anthem at all NC State basketball games.

Drew II will eventually transfer to NC State, where he will play 40 minutes per game so as to impress the pro scouts with his stupendous talents.

The Wolfpack fight song with be changed to mimic the old Frank Sinatra song - "Drew be Drew be Drew...."

That's a good thing with the way Reggie has been playing lately.

That's exactly right, and we're much more vulnerable to possible injuries now. LD2 was actually handling coming off the bench with better play. It must sting to have a freshman take away your starting role, but KM earned that right. It will take time to work out the new rotation, and look at the schedule we face to break in the new rotation. Oh well. That's the way it goes. No excuses - just gotta play who we have.

Just exactly how many years can a student athlete stay & play?? The stupidity of the twin players who left last year to go warm the bench for a year at another college can only be called stupid..unless you can stay & play forever & usually on an apparently never-ending paid scholarship? This was a stupid move for the 2 who left last year and we haven't heard much about them have we? Now after 3 yrs. this kid is leaving because he can't play all the time&Dad&Mom are PO'd you think he knows this is a TEAM sport, but Daddy's connections will play a big role in him going PRO NOT to another college. His lack of dedication to what he has been given by UNC and his childish attitude of "that's mine not yours give it back now" comes through load & clear!Wonder what his grades are like & what he scored on the SAT's,what his major is??The only ones who should feel screwed over are the fans, the school&Roy for being used for so long when it could have been given to a player who hung in there always!

As long as KM does not get injured, UNC will be fine. If for some reason something happens to him, it would be a disaster.

I understand that in places where basketball is irrelevant (like Raleigh) you might ask that, but the rest of the state actually has basketball and is interested in the story.

UNC's problems have been from talent joining the NBA early, not transfers. The Wear twins were homesick and not a good fit. Drew is just a puzz.

Looks at it this way, Bullock will be getting way more than 16 minutes a game now.
