— Kimberly Martinez, a veteran college head and assistant coach, has been named assistant volleyball coach at NC State, Wolfpack head coach Bryan Bunn announced on Tuesday.

Martinez has spent the last four seasons as the top assistant at Marshall, after serving as the head coach for three seasons at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, where she was one of the youngest head coaches in NCAA Division I.

“We are excited about adding Kimberly to our staff,” said fourth-year coach Bryan Bunn. “She brings a wealth of experience to this job, in addition to her experience as a Division I head coach. I've known Kimberly since she played in college and she has always had a passion and love for the game and coaching.”

Bunn has successfully overseen the transformation of the Wolfpack program, with back-to-back 20-win seasons and the school’s first appearance in the NCAA Championship since 1987. The Pack finished 22-10 overall last season, with a 12-8 ACC record, setting a record in ACC victories and posting the first winning season in conference play since 1988.

He expects Martinez – a native of Sugar Land, Texas, who played collegiately at Texas A&M-Kingsville – to help the Wolfpack continue its climb in the ACC standings. She will work with the team’s outside hitters and passers. She will also recruit the West Coast.

“She’s been doing this a long time now and knows the sport very well,” Bunn said. “She also has a lot of contacts that will help us out.”

While at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, Martinez coached the 2006 Southland Conference Newcomer of the Year, Christie Feliz, who ended her career as the school's all-time leader in kills-per-game (3.49).

Prior to Corpus Christi, Martinez served as the top assistant at Texas-El Paso for two seasons, where she served as recruiting coordinator, defensive coordinator and as the outside hitters coach. The Miners posted a 31-24 overall record, including a 21-10 mark in 2005.

In January 2005, Martinez was chosen to lead the Sun Country Region Youth High Performance team under the United States Volleyball Association. As co-head coach, she participated in the High Performance Coaches Clinic at the United States Olympic Training Center.

Martinez served as head coach at Caldwell High School in Caldwell, Texas, where she led the Lady Hornets to the 2003 3A State semifinals. She was named the District 18-3A Coach of the Year and the Brazos Valley Area Coach of the Year.

She spent the 2002 season as an assistant at Rice, helping the team to an 18-16 overall record.

Martinez played at Texas A&M-Kingsville from 1996-99. After completing her eligibility, she stayed on as an assistant coach until 2001. She received a bachelor of science degree in kinesiology in 2001.
