VB: NC State rolls past App State, 3-0, in home opener

— The NC State women’s volleyball team remained unblemished on the year by collecting its fourth 3-0 sweep of the season, against Appalachian State Friday evening in Reynolds Coliseum. The Wolfpack have not dropped a set in any of its matches this season, posting a perfect 12-0 mark.

“We started off a little slow, but we made some adjustments and came back and played really well at the end of the first set and took control over sets two and three,”said head coach Bryan Bunn.

NC State won its first set in the 2013 Courtyard Midtown Classic against the Mountaineers, 25-19, before winning the second set, 25-21. The Pack raced out to an early lead in the third set by winning eight of the first nine points. NC State went on to win the third frame, 25-10 to remain undefeated.

The two teams traded points in the early stages of the first set, before the Wolfpack went on a 5-0 run to regain the lead, 16-14. After an Appalachian State timeout halted the run by the Pack, the Mountaineers won two of the next three points to trail, 17-16, but NC State extended the lead after kills by Rachel Buckley and Brie Merriwether.

The Wolfpack opened the second set with a kill by junior Dariyan Hopper and never looked back from that point as the Pack never trailed in the second set.

NC State dominated in the third set, jumping out to a 4-0 lead and extending it to 8-1 before an Appalachian State timeout. Fortunately for the Wolfpack, the timeout did not interrupt its rhythm as it won five of the next seven points to stretch the lead to 13-3. The Pack led by as much as 17 points in the third set, but the Mountaineers went on a 3-0 run to trim the deficit to 14.

Merriwether led the Wolfpack offense with 10 kills and a .412 attack average. Hopper and junior Alesha Wilson each chipped in with nine. Hopper recorded a .350 hitting percentage, while Buckley recorded a .286 to go along with seven kills.

Defensive specialist Rachel Eppley tallied 12 digs and fellow libero Maddie Brown notched nine. Sophomore setter Tanna Aljoe, who was playing in her first match in Reynolds Coliseum, finished the contest with 31 assists and nine digs. She also contributed two kills and two blocks.

“It was really fun and I was really excited about it,” Aljoe said referring to her first match in Reynolds Coliseum. “It was somewhat nervous at first because there are so many people here, but it was great atmosphere and a great time.” 

NC State returns to action in the Courtyard Midtown Classic on Saturday, Sept. 7 against Binghamton at 1 p.m. in Reynolds Coliseum. The Wolfpack will return to the court for a second time on Saturday to host the Towson Tigers at 7 p.m.
