— North Carolina rolled over No. 23 Miami Friday night with a 3-0 sweep (25-18, 25-16, 25-18) at Carmichael Arena. Senior Emily McGee finished with double-digit kills (10) and digs (17) to lead the Tar Heels, who improved to 20-4, 11-3 with the win.

“What a great match we played tonight,” Carolina head coach Joe Sagula said. “We had really inspired play tonight, and we kept our focus throughout the night against a really good Miami team, one of the top in our conference. This shows the improvements we’ve made and where we’ve come from. We need to continue this kind of play at this level and at this time of the season.”

“What I really liked tonight is that we made some great things happen on defense. I think our defense really supported our offensive play, which looked really sharp. You see all the kills from Adkins, McGee and Berringer, but I think a big reason for that is Schnabl and Harms set a great match,” Sagula said.

The Tar Heels took the opening set 25-18 behind a strong .429 team attack. Sophomore Lauren Adkins tallied five kills, and senior Emily McGee had four digs and an ace for UNC. Sophomore Chaniel Nelson added four kills and a dig, while junior Kayla Berringer, senior Tia Gaffen and freshman Paige Neuenfeldt each recorded a block.

UNC kept up the momentum going into the second set, taking the frame by a 25-16 margin. McGee had six kills and seven digs, while Berringer added four kills, three digs and two blocks for the Tar Heels. Sophomore Ece Taner had six digs, and Gaffen recorded another two blocks. For the second straight set, UNC kept Miami below a .100 attack as the Hurricanes hit .045.

Adkins again led Carolina in the third frame, recording five kills and an ace to help give UNC the final 25-18 win. Berringer, Neuenfeldt and McGee each had four kills, while McGee and Taner had six digs apiece as the Tar Heels hit a dominant .432 through the set.

The last time UNC swept the Hurricanes was at home in 2010 (25-21, 25-17, 25-21). With Friday’s win, Carolina is now 11-0 at home heading into Saturday’s match against No. 11 Florida State at 5 p.m.

Admission is free for all UNC volleyball matches, and Saturday's match will be Carolina Kids Club night at Carmichael Arena.
