VB: Pack turns away Maryland, 3-1

— The NC State women’s volleyball team remained undefeated in home ACC matches with a 3-1 (25-19, 25-17, 21-25, 25-22) victory against the Maryland Terrapins Saturday evening in Reynolds Coliseum. Three different players recorded double-digit kills on the evening as the Wolfpack smacked 54 kills to the Terrapins' 38.

The Wolfpack got off to a great start in the first set as the squad jumped out to a 3-1 lead after back-to-back kills from junior Dariyan Hopper. Maryland took the lead, 6-5, after an attacking error by the Wolfpack. State responded with a 5-0 run to regain the lead and extend the advantage to 10-6. At that point, the Terrapins used their first timeout of the match.

Following the timeout, Maryland scored consecutive points, but NC State countered with a 6-1 run forcing its opponent to use another timeout. The Pack outscored the Terrapins 4-1 down the stretch to win the first set, after Maryland trimmed the lead to 21-18.

In the second set, NC State held Maryland to a .000 hitting percentage as a result of eight errors from the Terrapins’ offense. The Wolfpack countered with a .273 attacking percentage, allowing the squad to cruise to a 25-17 win in the set. Maryland took the lead in the set, 4-3, but State answered with a kill by junior Rachel Buckley and forced another Terrapin attack error to regain the lead, 7-5. The Wolfpack never relinquished the lead in the frame and used several 3-0 runs to run away with the set.

The third set saw the score tied 12 different times as the Wolfpack looked to put the Terrapins away, but was unable to do so. Maryland held the advantage most of the set, but NC State continued to stay within striking distance. A late 7-3 run by the Terrapins allowed the squad to win the frame, 25-21.

NC State refocused before the fourth set and came out with a sense of urgency as the Pack scored the first point of the set and never trailed. A kill by Maryland’s Ashleigh Crutcher knotted the score at two, but State reeled off three unanswered points to recapture the lead, 5-2. Senior Brie Merriwether ignited a 4-0 run late in the set with a kill, as the Wolfpack extended its lead to 20-15. Hopper capped the set on a kill from sophomore setter Tanna Aljoe.

Hopper headlined the Wolfpack offense with 15 kills, followed by Buckley with 12. Glass recorded her fourth double-double of the season and second of the weekend with 10 kills and 18 digs. Junior Alston Kearns paced the defense with 19 digs and freshman Maddie Brown registered 13. Alesha Wilson, a junior from Keller, Texas, tallied five blocks, including a season-high three solo stops. Aljoe dished out 44 assists in the contest.
NC State will return to action on Friday, Nov. 1 when it travels to Miami for a 7 p.m. tilt.
