Posted November 25, 2012
Chapel Hill, N.C. — The North Carolina volleyball team will head to Ames, Iowa, for the first and second rounds of the NCAA Tournament where the Tar Heels will face familiar postseason foe California in the first round on Thursday, Nov. 29.
The winner of that first round match will play the winner of the Iowa State- IPFW match on Friday, Nov. 30. The second round winner in Ames, Iowa, will move on to the regional site of Berkeley, Calif., which will be held Dec. 7 and 8.
"We are delighted to be in the tournament once again," UNC head coach Joe Sagula said. "I'm a little amused in having to play Cal-Berkeley three times in a row, and I'm sure they are as well. We're excited to be playing, and we feel like we're in a position to go out an play our best in Ames. I'm sure that Iowa State will do an outstanding job as a host, and we're looking forward to facing some really good competition."
This will be the third straight year UNC plays Cal in the NCAA Tournament. In 2010, the Tar Heels lost to the Golden Bears 3-0 in Berkeley, Calif., in the second round after defeating Mississippi 3-1 in the first round. Last year, Carolina topped Cal 3-2 in the first round in Malibu, Calif., before losing a 3-0 match to host Pepperdine in the second round.
This is North Carolina's 14th appearance in the NCAA Tournament, with the team's highest finish coming in a 2002 Sweet Sixteen appearance where the Tar Heels dropped a 3-0 match to Hawaii in Lincoln, Neb.
UNC finished the regular season with a 25-5 record overall and 16-4 to finish third in ACC play. The Tar Heels were No. 14 in NCAA RPI.
