— The NC State women’s volleyball team collected its first ACC road win of the season with a 3-0 sweep against the Boston College Eagles Friday night inside Power Gymnasium. The Wolfpack won the first set, 26-24, before taking the second set by a comfortable 25-17 margin. State overcame an early deficit in the third set to win it, 25-20.

“We started off kind of slow, but we bounced back and played well,” said head coach Bryan Bunn. “When they were leading the match, we continued to serve the ball tough and make the plays defensively which allowed us to get the win.”

The Eagles used the familiarity of playing in their home facility to their advantage early in the first set as they jumped out to a 6-1 lead, forcing NC State to call a timeout. Junior Alesha Wilson recorded her first kill of the match to stymie the run on an assist from setter Tanna Aljoe. The Wolfpack trailed throughout most of the set, before taking its first lead in the frame, 23-22, on a service ace by freshman Maddie Brown.

Boston College answered by scoring consecutive points to take the lead, 24-23. The Wolfpack fought off set point to tie the score at 24, after a kill by junior Nikki Glass. Dariyan Hopper, a junior from Shorewood, Ill., followed with a kill, before her classmate Wilson closed out the set for the Pack with another kill.

“We struggled a little offensively and I think that’s why they were able to get the leads,” Bunn added. “I thought we made big plays when we needed to in order to get points.”

In the second set, BC scored the first point, but State responded by forcing an attack error by one of the Eagle hitters. The Wolfpack took the lead on a service ace by Glass and never trailed again in the set. The Eagles tied the score at nine and then again at 10, but the Pack kept them from taking the advantage. State claimed set point on a block by Glass and senior Brie Merriwether.

Junior outside hitter Rachel Buckley, playing in her first match since injuring her foot against Wisconsin, ignited the Wolfpack offense in the third frame with an early kill to give State the 1-0 lead. Boston College countered to take the lead and held the advantage until late in the set.

Eagle hitter Anna Skold put her team ahead, 19-16, but Bunn quickly called a timeout to talk with his team. The Wolfpack ended the set on a 9-1 run to win the third set, 25-20.

Glass headlined the Wolfpack offense with eight kills, while Merriwether and Wilson each tallied seven. Junior Alston Kearns led a balanced defensive effort with 11 digs, followed by Aljoe and Glass with nine and seven, respectively.

Freshman setter Maggie Speaks and Aljoe split time at the setter position, with Speaks recording 16 assists and Aljoe eight.

“Maggie has been playing well in practice and came into the match today and did a nice job,” said Bunn. “She set up the offense well and also took care of the ball.”

NC State will return to action on Sunday, Oct. 6, when it travels to Syracuse for a 1 p.m. tilt. The match will be broadcast to a national audience on ESPN3.
