— The NC State women’s volleyball team struggled offensively against the Miami Hurricanes and dropped a 3-0 (25-20, 25-19, 25-14) decision Friday night inside the Knight Sports Complex.

“We didn’t pass the ball well tonight and when you don’t, it makes it tough to win,” said head coach Bryan Bunn. “Miami served very tough and when you can’t pass it’s tough to get into a rhythm offensively.”

The Wolfpack opened the match by scoring the first two points in the set on kills by juniors Alesha Wilson and Dariyan Hopper to lead, 2-0. Miami used a 4-0 run to take its first lead in the set, 7-5, after a kill by Alexis Mourning. State countered with seven unanswered points to take the advantage, 13-8. The Hurricanes would not be outdone, however, and countered with a 7-0 run of their own to capture the lead for good and held on for a 25-20 first-set victory.

NC State took its first lead in the second set, 5-4, after an attack error by the Hurricanes. Miami used three consecutive points to take the lead in the frame, 9-8, and the Pack was not able to regain the advantage. A 5-0 run by the Canes extended their lead to 14-9 and they stymied any attempts of a comeback in the set.

In the third set, the Wolfpack raced out to a 6-2 lead, but three unanswered points by the Hurricanes trimmed the lead to 6-5. After an attack error extended the Pack lead to 7-5, Miami went on a 5-0 run to take the lead in the set, 10-7, and built off the advantage throughout the frame to win it, 25-14.

Wilson led the Pack offensively with a match-high nine kills and Hopper chipped in with eight. Junior Alston Kearns paced the defense with 13 digs, while freshman Maddie Brown contributed seven.

NC State returns to action on Sunday, Nov. 3 when it makes the trip over to Tallahassee, Fla., from Coral Gables to face the Florida State Seminoles. First serve is slated for 2 p.m. and the match will be broadcast on ESPN3.

“We have to refocus on passing and serving the ball tougher before Sunday’s match against Florida State,” Bunn added.
