The NC State women’s volleyball team concluded the 2013 regular season schedule with a tough 3-2 (17-25, 25-20, 25-15, 20-25, 16-14) loss against the Wake Forest Demon Deacons Saturday afternoon inside Reynolds Gym. The Wolfpack finishes the regular season with a 20-12 record overall, including an 11-9 mark in ACC play.

Junior Rachel Buckley led a balanced offensive attack for the Wolfpack with 14 kills, and classmates Nikki Glass, Alesha Wilson and freshman Eve Davis each recorded 10 kills in the contest. Glass notched 13 digs in the match to register her seventh double-double performance of the season. Freshman Rachel Eppley paced the squad defensively with 15 digs, while junior Alston Kearns and sophomore Tanna Aljoe tallied 13 and 11, respectively. Aljoe also dished out 42 assists, recording her eighth double-double of the season in the process.

The Wolfpack opened the match with an impressive performance in the first set, as it captured the opening frame, 25-17. State raced out to a 10-5 lead in the set before Wake Forest used its first timeout. A 3-0 run by the Pack gave the squad a 23-15 advantage and Buckley capped the set with a kill from Aljoe.

The second set proved to be a seesaw battle as the score was tied 10 times and the lead changed three times. With the score knotted at 18, Wake scored five unanswered points to take the lead, 23-18, en route to winning the frame, 25-20. The Demon Deacons jumped out to a quick 4-1 lead in the third set, forcing NC State to use a timeout. State tied the score at eight, but Wake countered with a 3-0 run to gain the advantage and never relinquished it.

Down 2-1 in the match, NC State rallied to win the fourth set to force a decisive fifth set. The Wolfpack used a 3-0 run to extend the lead to 24-18 and Wilson put down a kill to end the set. Glass opened the frame with a kill to give the Pack the early lead and the score was tied three times, but Wake Forest never held the lead in the fourth set.

Wake Forest started the fifth set on a 6-1 run, but NC State answered with three consecutive points to trim the deficit to 6-4. Trailing 14-11, the Wolfpack fought off match point three different times to tie the score at 14, but the Demons Deacons scored the next two points to win the set, 16-14.
