Veltkamp named NC State strength and conditioning coach

NC State head football coach Dave Doeren has announced that Jason Veltkamp has been named head strength and conditioning coach for the football program. Veltkamp has spent the last five seasons as the head strength and conditioning coach at Arkansas.

“Jason is another coach who has been a part of building championship programs,” said Doeren. “He coached in the SEC at Arkansas and he worked at Utah with Urban Meyer and Kyle Whittingham on championship teams in the Mountain West. He helped build Louisville into a Big East championship squad and guide Arkansas to a top five ranking.

“Not only has he built championship ball clubs, but he’s prepared his players to succeed at the NFL level, as proven by the number of players he’s worked with who have been drafted,” Doeren continued. “Jason is well known as a very intense motivator who works hard to get the most out of his players. With the selection of four Razorback players in the 2012 NFL draft, Veltkamp has now worked with 47 NFL draft picks in his career. He has also coached at Louisville, Utah and Utah State during his career.

Prior to arriving at Arkansas in 2008, Veltkamp spent the previous four years (2004-07) as the head strength and conditioning coach for football at Louisville. During his three years with that program, the Cardinals earned trips to the Liberty, Gator and Orange bowls.

From 2001-03, the Bozeman, Mont., native was the director of strength and conditioning at the University of Utah after working as a strength and conditioning assistant from 1999-2000.

During his tenure with the Utes, the football team won two Mountain West Conference championships, earned three bowl bids and had wins over Southern California in the 2001 Las Vegas Bowl and Southern Mississippi in the 2003 Liberty Bowl. The men’s basketball team also won three conference titles and earned three NCAA Tournament bids with Veltkamp organizing its workouts.

Veltkamp began his career in 1995 as a student assistant and volunteer coach working with the offensive line at Carroll College in Helena, Mont. In 1996, he moved into the strength and conditioning field as the coach for the Helena Ice Pirates Junior “A” hockey team for the 1996 season.

He returned to Carroll and assisted with spring practice before working at Utah State as a strength and conditioning graduate assistant from 1997-98. His time at USU saw him work with 14 sports, including football, basketball, volleyball and track.

“Jason Veltkamp comes to us with a history of preparing teams to win conference championships and bowl games and developing NFL prospects,” said NC State’s Assistant Athletic Director for Strength and Conditioning, Bob Alejo. “The high-energy motivational skills he used to elevate the programs at Arkansas, Louisville and Utah will have an immediate impact on our football team’s results. He will be a tremendous asset to State Strength.”

Veltkamp has worked with four NFL first-round draft picks in defensive tackle Amobe Okoye (Houston), offensive tackle Jordan Gross (Carolina), quarterback Alex Smith (San Francisco) and offensive guard Eric Wood (Buffalo) and also helped develop basketball center Andrew Bogut (Milwaukee). Other professional athletes he has trained include Jason Spitz (Green Bay), Steve Smith and Maake Kemoeatu (Carolina), Elvis Dumervil (Denver), Michael Bush (Oakland), Kolby Smith (Kansas City), Kerry Rhodes (New York Jets), and Chris Kemeoatu and William Gay, both of whom played for Pittsburgh in Super Bowl XXLIII.

“We are extremely excited to be joining Coach Doeren and the Wolfpack football program,” said Veltkamp. “State Strength is devoted to developing and empowering student-athletes to compete at the highest levels of competition, and I am fired up to be a part of it.”

A graduate of Carroll College, Veltkamp was a four-year starter for the Fighting Saints, playing for Bob Petrino, Sr. He was a two-time all-conference performer in 1993 and 1994 and was also a team captain on the 1994 team.

Veltkamp earned his master’s degree in exercise science from Utah State in 1998 and is certified by the National Strength and Conditioning Association. He is also a member of the Collegiate Strength and Conditioning Coaches Association and American Football Coaches Association.

Veltkamp’s wife, Kristen, attended physical therapy school at Duke, graduating in 1998. The couple has two sons, Caden and Colton.

“We look forward to having Jason and Kristen and their sons, Caden and Colton, join our program,” said Doeren.

    He has been involved with some solid programs. Sounds like a solid hire to me. What these guys do to get a team in top physical form is highly valuable.

    Why you say that?

    Do want Pack fans to note all the articles about new coaches. Lots of Pack fans complained of over-coverage as Fedora started hiring coaches last year.
