Vick's heroics help Mudcats kick Keys

Posted August 7, 2014

Logan Vick homered and made a game-saving catch in the ninth inning to assure the Carolina Mudcats a series-clinching 6-4 win over the Frederick Keys on Thursday night at Harry Grove Stadium. Vick finished with two hits and collected three RBI for the Mudcats (23-23, 52-61). The team has taken 10 of 15 from the Keys (20-25, 52-60) this year.

Dylan Baker (2-2) earned his first win since returning from a fracture fibula in July. The right-hander limited Frederick to two runs on five hits across six innings. He walked two and struck out three. Grant Sides worked around two hits and notched his fourth save on the heels of Vick’s sterling grab in left-center. Branden Kline (7-6) was hit for five runs, three earned, on nine hits over six frames. He walked one and fanned six.

The Keys mounted three rallies late in the game. Trailing 5-2 in the seventh, Brenden Webb belted a moon shot off reliever Ben Heller over the high wall in right. Tucker Nathans reached on a fielding error at first by Heller and moved to second on a walk Wynston Sawyer. Josh Martin relieved Heller and managed to throw out the lead runner at third on a bunt attempt by Lucas Herbst.

However, Jerome Pena followed with a single to score Sawyer and moved into scoring position on a fielding error by Luigi Rodriguez in right. Martin buckled down to record the final two outs.

Chih-Hsien Chiang doubled to open the eighth, but Martin was, again, able to pitch Carolina out of the jam. Sawyer and Pena reached on a pair of singles against Sides in the ninth. The Alabaman punched out Herbst and Adrian Marin before Trey Mancini launched a deep fly to left-center. Vick made a diving catch, landing on the warning track, to preserve the win.

Frederick opened the scoring with two runs off Baker in the first. Pena and Marin singled to begin and Mancini stroked a double to left-center that plated Pena. Chiang bounced out to short and scored Marin for a 2-0 lead. Baker settled in to finish the frame and posted five scoreless innings to end his night.

The Mudcats, meanwhile, erupted for five runs in the fourth against Kline. Yandy Diaz doubled and Jeremy Lucas launched his 12th round-tripper of the season to even the score at two. Todd Hankins laid down a bunt single along the third base line to keep the momentum going. The speedy center fielder stole second and LeVon Washington worked a walk to put two on.

Luigi Rodriguez bounced a single to left scoring Hankins and a pair of errors moved everyone up. Herbst overran the ball in left and Pena missed the catch at second attempting to throw out Rodriguez. Vick capitalized on the errors by scoring both with a double to right-center for a 5-2 lead.

Carolina returns home to host Myrtle Beach for a weekend series August 8-10.
