Saturday marks the 2012 homecoming game for the St. Augustine’s football team and will be just the second time the Falcons ever play on campus.
After 144 years of asking the question, ‘where are the bleachers,’ and seven active years of fighting for a stadium, St, Aug got it. But things still aren’t that simple.
The first on-campus game at the new George Williams Athletic Complex, played one year ago this weekend, treated students, fans and alumni to a 34-15 win in the Falcons’ 2011 homecoming game. Making history in their debut, over 5,100 people gathered at the stadium to cheer on the Falcons, finding standing room only space around the track and gridiron.
But despite the artificial turf football field with a world class track around it, the seats are not yet permanent.
The university had long asked for a 5,000-seat facility before settling on 2,500 after neighbors of the university voiced concerns over noise and traffic. They also had to make a concession, limiting the number of events held at the stadium per year to 15 or less.
By making these sacrifices, the vision that was supported by former mayor Charles Meeker came to life after being approved by the city in Sept. 2011.
However, the 2012 football schedule that penciled all Falcons home games at the stadium was forced to audible after it was realized the 2,500 permanent seats would not be ready in time. So St. Aug continued to play their home games at Durham County Stadium.

What a weekend for the Triangle schools in football. Every team in the Raleigh/Durham area won their game - and not just the big three.
The three HBCU's represented the Triangle this weekend with victiroes of their own to make it a six-team sweep.
Division I, FCS level, North Carolina Central University pulled off a big win over powerhouse South Carolina State, 40-10. They are now 2-0 in the MEAC.
The Falcons of Saint Augustine's University are 2-1 in the CIAA and 4-2 overall after holding on in a wild win Saturday. The star of the day was Tyron Laughinghouse who earned his fourth consecutive CIAA weekly honor Monday following three touchdowns and 79 yards receiving. Roderick Davenport rushed for 127 yards on 27 carries. The Falcons had a season high 495 offensive yards, 218 yards rushing and 277 yards passing. Back up quarterback Alex Munro was 11-for-18 for 156 yards passing for three TDs. The Falcons travel to Winston-Salem this week to play the Rams. They host the Fayetteville State Broncos for homecoming Oct. 20.
The Shaw Bears pulled their record to 3-3 and 2-1 in the CIAA with their weekend win. Shaw running back Marquise Grizzle added to an impressive season as he rushed for 163 yards. He now has had three 100-yard rushing games this year. He also caught five passes for 103 yards and a touchdown. Grizzle was originally going to Murray state - a Division I program - but did not qualify academically and was picked up by the Bears a few days

Jacqie Carpenter was recently named the new commissioner of the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association, but the first appointed African-American female commissioner of the conference accepts the position with considerable problems to solve.
Carpenter comes from the NCAA where she began as an assistant before being promoted to associate director and for nine years, she served as alliance director of the Women’s Basketball Division I Championship. With the CIAA, Carpenter is taking on a multitude of issues, beginning financially.
For starters, the CIAA is a 501 (c) 3 non-profit that uses donations to survive. That poses a fundamental economic problem when considering the following:
According to a WBTV in Charlotte report last updated Wednesday, the CIAA is facing a $500,000 deficit due to poor ticket sales, decreasing sponsorships and unexpected legal bills. In order to make up that difference, the CIAA Board of Directors has asked each member school to contribute $25,000 to help the conference close the gap.
That in itself may be a difficult proposition for many of the 12 CIAA schools as many of them are facing financial shortfalls of their own. Schools such as Shaw, Saint Augustine’s and Virginia Union are already having to make some hard-line cuts for the upcoming year. And St. Paul’s College has recently gone through a 12-month probationary period for their accreditation due to financial limitations.
Then there is the matter of the

Who will be the next commissioner of the CIAA? That is the question on everyone’s mind around the conference.
Leon G. Kerry, who had led the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) for the past 22 years retired unexpectedly this year. While the CIAA suggests that Kerry stepped down on his own volition, there is speculation that the CIAA's chief might have departed involuntarily due in part to ethical questions surrounding $100,000 in payments that went to Ereka Crawford-Brim, an employee with Charlotte's Regional Visitor Authority. Kerry was also a big part of the move that shifted the conference tournament from Raleigh to Charlotte.
Peggy Davis, who had previously been head coach of the Virginia State basketball team as well as athletics director at the school, was recently named Interim Commissioner. Davis already made some noise in the interim position when she fired Bobby Rankin, who was head of security. Davis accused him of getting credentials and signage for his security team and was not authorized to do so.
I have been going to the tournament for years and have seen some great tournaments and some bad ones. When I was playing in the tournament, it was in Winston-Salem and it was horrible. There was nothing to do and it seemed like nobody was having a good time. When it came to Raleigh It was okay, but the city did not adequately handle a crowd like the CIAA brings. There are people coming in from all

Charlotte has played a tremendous host for the CIAA Tournament offering fans a little bit of everything.
The Bobcats arena has been busy everyday with events. And I am telling you, even though the Bobcats are the worst team in the NBA, I believe they have the best food in the NBA. They have soul food and seafood, plus the junk food. This place has it all.
All of the CIAA cheerleaders have been in attendance and came with a treat for the fans Saturday morning. Each year they dress up in different outfits and have a fierce competition to get audience reactions. As always the bands are participating and its a very exciting event.
Friday night was tough for the Shaw men's team. Winston-Salem State brought an end to both Shaw's 21-game winning streak and their chances of defending their CIAA championship. They were defeated by the Rams 51-48. The Bears, who are 25-3 overall, committed 20 turnovers. This was the same amount of TO's they had when they last lost against West Florida on Dec 13th.
You have to give those Rams credit, after losing twice to the Bears during the regular season they really figured out a way to slow down Shaw's heavy guard play. This is the second year back in the CIAA for Winston Salem State. Three years ago they were applying for Division I play but that did not work out as planned so they were giving the opportunity to return to the CIAA. Last year was the first year they were eligible to compete and played a play in game against

Time Warner Cable Arena was closely guarded with security and bomb-sniffing dogs Friday. Secret Service members were all throughout the building.
No, Michael Jordan was not walking in the building – it was someone more important.
The first lady, Michelle Obama, graced the CIAA Tournament with her joy, smile and warm spirit.
The place was jumping. The stands were packed as she participated in the Let’s Move! campaign that helps children with obesity.
Everyone was excited to have the first lady on the court, chanting “Obama” in the crowd as the kids gave her hugs. She ended her stay by taking pictures with

As I walked into Emery Gymnasium Thursday night for the Shaw-St. Augustine basketball game, I could definitely feel the excitement in the air. The rest of the fans apparently felt it too.
With about eight minutes to go in the first half, there was disorder in the stands. Next thing I knew, the police were escorting the Shaw woman’s basketball team out of the gym.
All you could hear was cheering from Falcons fans.
The Raleigh schools’ rivalry is very tense and will bring out the best of you – player or fan. Faculty and former players cheering and yelling at the top of their lungs to get their point across is expected.
I sat in the front row Thursday with my former teammate, Charles Ward, who had a good career at St. Aug, and legendary track coach and athletic director George “Pup” Williams. Pup gives the referees a little fun talk and then talks a little smack to the Shaw players as they plea with officials. All you can do is smile and be glad to be a part of such a great tradition.
Charles and I reminisced about the when we played Shaw. We didn’t even play the game at either school’s gym - we played at Broughton High School or the Civic Center (let me add I only had a chance to play once; it was not a pretty site).
Even today, neither school’s gym is big enough to handle the crowd of a St. Aug-Shaw game.
This game needs to be played where both schools can experience the big crowd atmosphere, instead of people not able
