UNC corner position gets even thinner after injury
Aug 18, 2011
According to the University of North Carolina, sophomore cornerback Jabari Price injured a tendon in his left hand in Tuesday’s practice and will require surgery.
Price was expected to be a starter opposite Charles Brown on the UNC depth chart. He appeared in all 13 Tar Heels games a season ago as a true freshman.
Price is one of just five players listed at the cornerback position on the UNC roster after Mywan Jackson decided not to return. In addition to Brown, who will be suspended for the Sept. 3 season opener against James Madison, the Tar Heels have sophomores Terry Shankle and Josh Hunter and junior Pete Mangum.
Hunter appears to be the front runner to gain a start on Week 1. He had a very good spring game that included an interception. He appeared in eight games in 2010.
The opposite corner is a question mark. Eight players are listed as "defensive back" on the UNC roster - seven are true freshman and the other is Tim Furr, a walk-on sophomore.
The official UNC football twitter page posted Thursday that junior Todd Harrelson will move from wide receiver to the cornerback position. Harrelson doubled as a kick returner for part of last season and made the catch that set up the game-tying field goal of the 2010 Music City Bowl. He was an All-State defensive back in high school in Virginia.
Shankle played in eight games as a redshirt freshman, mostly on special teams, before tearing his ACL.
Mangum was a walk-on in 2008 from Leesville Road High School. He was the special teams MVP in 2010 and played in six games in 2009.
Price is scheduled to have surgery Friday at UNC Hospitals by Dr. Donald Bynum. His return date and status will not be known until after the surgery.

I always hate to hear about injuries (even at Carolina). Especially in the preseason.- Posted by TruthBKnown Left The Building
Best wishes for a speedy surgery and recovery.
Thanks, TBK. We may pull for rival teams, but I hate to see any player suffer an injury. Carolina has had it's share of injuries the past few years, and I remember two years ago State had injuries of epic proportions. It's part of the game, but pre-season injuries really hurt. While our secondary is a concern, I'm most concerned with Renner as he has no real game experience. Anyway, thanks for your post.
